Position Description

The Department of History at the University of Chicago invites applicants for an open rank tenure line faculty position in the history of sub-Saharan Africa, beginning on or after July 1, 2023. All time periods and places will be considered, but a focus on eastern Africa is particularly welcome, as is expertise on Anglophone or Lusophone Africa. There is a preference for scholars who employ African languages in their research, and who show a durable, ongoing commitment to the continent.

Qualifications

Candidates must have earned the PhD prior to the start of the appointment.

Application Instructions

Applicants must apply online at the University of Chicago’s Interfolio website at http://apply.interfolio.com/110609 and include: 1) a cover letter, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) a research statement, 4) a teaching statement, 5) an article or chapter-length writing sample, and 6) the names and emails of three recommenders.  Consideration of applications will begin on October 1, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled or the search is ended.
