Position Title:
EDS Capstone/Cornerstone Adjunct Faculty

Pay Range:

Mines is offering a per course salary of $5,000 - $6,000.

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.

The Opportunity:

The Engineering, Design, and Society (EDS) division at the Colorado School of Mines invites applications for a part-time position as a Project Advisor in the Capstone Design Program (Senior Design) and/or in the Cornerstone Design Program (Design I) . Both adjunct faculty positions provide project oversight to student teams in a real-world application of technical problems.

Capstone (Senior Design)

Key distinguishing feature: Maintain high expectations for student independence, professionalism, and delivery of quality design/prototype materials to the client.

Capstone Description: A creative multidisciplinary design experience emerging from combined efforts in civil, design, electrical, environmental, and mechanical engineering degree programs. This program has been established to demonstrate the value and ingenuity which can be derived from cooperative design efforts among the various traditional engineering disciplines.

For more information on the Senior Design course please see the course website: https://capstone.mines.edu/

Cornerstone (First-Year Design)

Key distinguishing feature: Bring patience and enthusiasm to introduce and reassure students on their first experience with extreme ambiguity and messy real-world problems.

Cornerstone Description: Teaches and inspires Freshman and Sophomore students to solve complex, open-ended problems using critical thinking and workplace skills. Students work in multidisciplinary teams in classes of 25 to learn through doing, with emphasis on defining and diagnosing the problem through a holistic lens of technology, people, and environment. More information about this program, its courses and its learning objectives can be found at https://cornerstone.mines.edu .

Responsibilities:

As an Adjunct Faculty for either course, you will be responsible for:
  • Achieving course learning outcomes through instruction and team management.
  • Holding meetings with your teams, and responding to emails and grading all deliverables in a timely fashion (rubrics are provided to assist with grading).
  • Serving as a course “manager” by providing guidance to project teams in a highly interactive environment.
  • Attending all meetings and class sessions, including kickoff and end-of-semester meetings with the instructional team.
Capstone Responsibilities: You will guide student teams in how to manage and execute a successful design project – allowing them to explore design options, as well as build and testing products. Responsibilities also include steering teams back on track if they lose sight of the design objectives, and helping them understand and execute professional communications with their client.

Cornerstone Responsibilities: Project classes are held twice per week, either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday, for 75 minutes, between 7am to 6pm. Hands-on Skills Labs are held once per week for 110 minutes Tuesdays through Fridays. An additional office hour held weekly is expected per section taught. Established course materials (including lectures, assignments, rubrics, and general structure) are developed by the program and provided for faculty, though additional sharing of experiences and methods by faculty is encouraged without excluding existing curriculum and learning outcomes and activities. Timely and regular feedback and grading is expected for student deliverables, typically within two weeks of submission. All program faculty are supported via weekly one-hour meetings. Meeting attendance is especially expected for new faculty, but is encouraged for all faculty.

Minimum Qualifications:

    • Technical communication.
    • User-engaged design: identifying and engaging with stakeholders and users throughout the problem solving process.
    • Hands-on skills: building, hand sketching, CAD, arduino, etc.
