Scope of Job:
Psychological Science Department ChairThe University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites nominations and applications for the position of chair of the Psychological Science Department. Reporting directly to the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, the chair will be responsible for setting strategic, operational, and financial direction for the psychological science department. The college seeks a dynamic leader who will work in concert with faculty, staff, and students to promote a culture of excellence. The chair shall create and carry out a vision that leads the department to greater prominence in the Valley and beyond. UTRGV was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 as the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. This transformative initiative provided the opportunity to expand educational opportunities in the Rio Grande Valley, including a new School of Medicine, and made it possible for residents of the region to benefit from the Permanent University Fund - a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and other institutions. UTRGV is the second largest Hispanic Serving Institution in the United States located in a growing region on the border with Mexico and Latin America, where the majority of the students are bilingual and bicultural. UTRGV campuses, strategically located throughout the Valley, offer a unique opportunity to further unify and strengthen the psychological science department amongst the two main campuses of Edinburg and Brownsville.The psychological science department is seeking a chair who is a skilled, visionary leader with an established track record of research and administrative success. The successful candidate will lead the department to be the premiere psychological science program in South Texas, with a world-class reputation earned by delivering an outstanding education and cutting-edge research training to students and providing opportunities for professional growth and community engagement to all members of the department. The psychological science department chair is expected to inspire and support faculty, staff, and the predominantly Hispanic student population; foster an environment of collegiality, transparency, teamwork, respect and diversity; interact with all stakeholders to determine the priorities and direction of the department; support the expansion of the research capabilities of the department while maintaining excellence in teaching; increase the national recognition of the departmental programs; and advocate for the department within UTRGV.Professional Qualifications and Personal QualitiesThe successful candidate must possess an earned terminal degree (Ph.D.) in psychology or related field and have demonstrated leadership abilities in administration, personnel management, and budgeting. Also, the successful candidate must meet the requirements for tenure and appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or above and have an excellent track record in research and teaching. Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.

Texas law requires faculty members whose primary language is not English to
demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based
test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of
English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a satisfactory test score of 6.0 on the
