Individuals with qualifying law enforcement experience will receive consideration for advanced placement on the salary schedule and an accelerated interview and training track.

Factors considered by UWPD in determining a certified applicant's initial wage, may include the length of full-time law enforcement service, level of certification, agency size, specialized training and assignments, and other job related factors that would help the officer be successful in our agency.

Applicants with higher education degrees may also receive an educational incentive pay of $1.00 per hour for an Associate Degree, $2.00 per hour of a Bachelor's Degree and $3.00 for a Master's or above degrees. Employees are eligible to apply for tuition reimbursement.

Year 1 - $30.59
Year 3 - $33.25
Year 5 - $34.55
Year 7 - $35.07

UWPD has a performance bonus program and may pay lump sum bonuses on an annual basis up to 10% of annual salary.

Responsibilities:

Enforces laws, investigates complaints and incidents, maintains order, identifies criminal activity, and apprehends and arrest offenders to ensure safety and security on all institutional properties. This is a sworn law enforcement position under the general direction of a ranking officer or supervisor.
  • 20% Provides protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order and provides emergency aid to the institutional community
  • 20% Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information
  • 20% Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws
  • 15% Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional community
  • 10% Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others
  • 15% Required to work special events or assignments as designated by the Department.

You are required to have a minimum of 40 college credits by date of hire with expectation that you complete the Police Academy, sponsored by UW-Madison Police Department, to earn the 60 college credits required by the Department of Justice.

Qualifications:

-Prior law enforcement experience is not required, however the department welcomes experienced officers as part of our acceleration program. Selected candidates who are not already certified law-enforcement officers or are not certifiable as a law enforcement officer in the State of Wisconsin will be sponsored through a 720-hour law enforcement academy. Police Officers currently Wisconsin certified with 3 years of full-time employment as a sworn officer will be considered for an accelerated interview and background process, training program, and shortened probationary period. If certified from another State outside of Wisconsin these cases will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

Applicants with sworn law-enforcement experience, whether in Wisconsin or from another state are eligible to begin at an accelerated salary rate based on:

-This position requires a valid Wisconsin Driver's License with a minimum of 2 years driving experience within the United States and/or Canada.

-If you are not currently a Wisconsin certified law enforcement officer, you are required to have a minimum of 40 college credits by date of hire with expectation that you complete the police academy sponsored by UW-Madison Police Department to earn the 60 college credits required by the Department of Justice.

-Candidates must pass the initial application screening, all steps of the hiring process and a background investigation prior to beginning employment.

If you are not currently a certified law enforcement officer you will be enrolled in a law enforcement academy and required to pass the required standards. The Department will cover the costs of attending the academy.

Work Schedule:

This position is considered an essential position for the University Campus. Schedules rotate based on a pre-determined first shift, second shift, or third shift schedule and includes working holidays and weekends. Work beyond or outside hours scheduled may be required during emergencies, special events or as assigned.

The UW-Madison Police Department is pleased to offer a $2,000 hiring bonus for new full-time employees! The bonus is available to candidates hired in to police officer, security officer, and dispatcher positions. The $2,000 bonus will be paid in three phases over the course of the new hire's first year of employment.
