The University of Wyoming’s College of Education seeks a nationally/internationally recognized literacy scholar to serve as the Fisher Family Professor and Executive Director of the Literacy Research Center & Clinic. This named executive director will join a vibrant, growing faculty and program that is moving toward national prominence in literacy education. In addition to a salary commensurate with the status of a high profile, established scholar, this position includes an annual budget to assist the director’s research and teaching endeavors. We seek an individual who has a strong record of scholarship, extensive professional accomplishments, a history of successful extramural funding, and strong leadership skills. We welcome applications from all qualified candidates, and we are particularly interested in candidates from underrepresented groups.

 

The Fisher Family Executive Director of the LRCC will join two endowed chairs in literacy education, an endowed chair in science education, and an endowed chair in mathematics education, all in the college of education. The presence of a named executive director, two literacy endowed chairs and a robust faculty in literacy education offers us a significant opportunity to strengthen and expand the impact of literacy education in the College of Education, at the University of Wyoming, within the state of Wyoming, and in the nation.  The Fisher Family Executive Director of the LRCC will play a leadership role in (a) continuing to develop the LRCC (a literacy clinic that houses state-of-the-art technology for virtual and in-house clinical activity) in Wyoming and beyond, (b) improving our already excellent undergraduate and master’s programs and further developing a growing doctoral program, (c) expanding opportunities for collaboration among faculty and students, (d) increasing extramural funding and scholarly productivity, (e) expanding outreach to the state and the nation, and (f) continuing to develop a collaborative infrastructure amongst national and international scholars on focused lines of literacy research.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Work closely and collaboratively with CoE administrators, the literacy endowed chairs, literacy faculty, and the LRCC staff to provide visionary state and nationally recognized leadership as the executive director of the LRCC
  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of the LRCC
  • Continue with an active scholarly line of inquiry and publication
  • Seek extramural funding for research and development in literacy education
  • Recruit and advise graduate students in literacy education
  • Teach literacy courses in the candidate’s areas of expertise
  • Provide leadership and work collaboratively with literacy faculty to continue the development of a nationally recognized program in literacy education
  • Continue the development of the Literacy Research Center and Clinic
  • Collaborate with faculty and departments across the UW campus
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with professionals in public schools and non-governmental organizations
  • Live in Wyoming and establish and maintain partnerships with professionals in public schools and non-governmental organizations in Wyoming
  • Travel extensively within Wyoming to provide professional learning opportunities for Wyoming schools
  • Coordinate and serve as an ex-officio member of the Outreach Advisory Board to describe and promote the vision and opportunities for Wyoming that are available through the LRCC;
  • Work collaboratively with UW Foundation representatives to secure ongoing funding for LRCC operations and projects, and to provide stewardship to new and existing donors;
  • Oversee the selection, reporting, and evaluation processes for LRCC projects, in line with the vision and mission of the LRCC,
  • Carry out regular status updates to the CoE Dean, college, donors, Outreach Advisory Board and other stakeholders, as well as an annual report to donors and key stakeholders;
  • Develop and oversee fiscal year budget allocations for the LRCC;
  • Build, maintain, and further relationships with donors, legislators, WDE, and other Wyoming stakeholders;
  • Serve as a member of the College Leadership Council;
  • Attend meetings of UW Deans and Directors;
  • Attend state and national meetings/conferences, and collaborate with districts, NGOs, and community groups as needed to promote research-based literacy practices in Wyoming; and
  • Supervise LRCC Office Associate and graduate assistants funded by the LRCC.

 

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

We seek an established academic with an earned doctorate in literacy education or related field. Applicants should have a well-established record of research and scholarship commensurate with the rank of advanced associate or full professor, demonstrated excellence in teaching and advising graduate students, demonstrated effectiveness in collaborative leadership, and a history of extramural funding. A candidate’s research agenda should be relevant to literacy processes and education and include expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • K-3 literacy[1], adolescent literacy, family literacy, or early childhood literacy education
  • Literacy education for English learners or culturally diverse students
  • Elementary or adolescent literacy education, including developmental and disciplinary literacy
  • Evaluation and instruction of students with literacy difficulties
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

 

[1] Priority will be given to scholars whose research and teaching focuses on K-3 literacy.
