Position Overview
The Activate Academic Success Coach reports to the Coordinator of the Activate Program and works in close collaboration with the staff of Accessibility Services, staff of the Academic Success Center, the faculty, and campus colleagues to support the neuro-divergent student population at Merrimack College.The Success Coach will work directly with students identified as neuro-divergent (e.g. Autism, Asperger’s, Social Communication, Non-verbal Learning Disabilities) through weekly and bi-weekly individual coaching sessions. Coaching will center on developing crucial academic and executive functioning skills, as well as career readiness. Additionally, this individual will collaborate with the Activate team to plan and facilitate workshops centered on career readiness and academic skills. As a part of the larger Accessibility Services Office, this person will also collaborate with the team on a number of other projects, initiatives, and tasks within the office. The position requires a commitment to and experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion, cultural competency, and ability to relate to and to communicate effectively with students, staff, and faculty, representing diverse identities, communities and experiences.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct support to students identified as neuro-divergent and employ individualized strategies designed and implemented to teach students executive functioning and social skills, to have a successful college experience.

  • Provide holistic success coaching for a caseload of primarily first-year and second-year students to help foster academic success and self-determination, and help students persist to graduation.

  • Advise students during course pre-registration based on the learning strengths, abilities and interests of each student.

  • Develop and facilitate academic-skills-based and professional development workshops tailored to the needs of our neuro-divergent student population.

  • Review documentation and conduct intake meetings to determine appropriate and reasonable accommodations for each student.

  • Assist with retention efforts that address the characteristics and needs of a diverse population.

  • Ensure that confidentiality and privacy is maintained with respect to all communications and records considered confidential.

  • Assist with day-to-day operations and additional projects within the Accessibility Services Office as needed.

Qualifications:
  • Professional experience supporting neuro-divergent individuals, preferably in an educational setting.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Higher Education, School Counseling, or other related areas required, Master’s degree preferred.

  • Familiarity with interpreting diagnostic assessments for the purpose of determining appropriate accommodations.

  • Must possess a solid level of, or have the initiative to develop, knowledge of campus department partners for consultation and referrals and of academic curriculum to give general academic advice and make referrals.

  • Thrives in an entrepreneurial atmosphere, has a high degree of personal responsibility, is committed to continuous improvement, and has an unwavering focus on the students we serve.

  • Must possess excellent human relations, problem-solving, written, oral, and technological communication skills.

  • Must be available for occasional nights and weekends activities including Activate social and academic programming and admissions events as needed throughout the year.

This opportunity is not a remote or hybrid position as employees are essential in order to provide a fully on-campus, residential college experience for our students and the community.
