The Director of Alumni Relations will support the Assistant Dean of Advancement and External Affairs with the goal of meaningfully engaging College of Law alumni and promoting philanthropic support of the College of Law’s mission. The position will implement a successful strategic plan to develop and maintain strong relationships with the College of Law’s over 11,000 alumni. In coordination with the College of Law’s development and marketing and communications teams, the Director will design and execute a set of extensive programming and communications strategies to ensure deep and ongoing engagement of College of Law alumni.
The College of Law seeks a forward thinker and a team player, who is creative, innovative, self-confident, with high emotional intelligence and sound judgment. Position requires some work and appearances during weekends and evenings. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required. Juris Doctor preferred. A minimum of 10 years of experience in increasingly responsible positions in business, at a not-for-profit or government agency, or in higher education is required. Experience in alumni relations, student life or placement of university students, is preferred. Job Specific Qualifications
Superior verbal and written communication skills; public speaking skills preferred. Budgeting management skills required. Keen interest in the law, legal education, or the legal profession required. Knowledge of best practices in the advancement profession, particularly related to measuring ROI on engagement activities preferred; or possesses the motivation and curiosity to explore and learn best practices. Ability to use data-driven approaches to measuring engagement through business intelligence tools and the analysis of raw data. Excellent interpersonal skills. Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusive engagement and excellence. Demonstrated ability to engage with multiple stakeholders from diverse cultures or backgrounds and to work collaboratively in different team environments and with diverse constituencies. Social media and computer literacy. Strong project management and organizational skills. Strong database management skills and ability to produce detailed reports. Experience building and managing a board and the ability to solicit and raise funds and develop effective partnerships. Ability to manage multiple priorities. Detail oriented. Flexible.   • Develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate strategies, programs, and outreach to promote alumni engagement and to create and sustain value connections among alumni and strengthen their ties to their alma mater, with the goal of increasing meaningful alumni engagement and philanthropic support. Organize the College’s annual Law Alumni Weekend in Syracuse and other strategically designed regional, in-person and virtual events throughout the year.
  • Provide vision and leadership to the College’s Law Alumni Association ( SULAA ) board. Staff board meetings and serve as liaison to the College. In partnership with the development team, recruit and nominate alumni for SULAA board service and recommend alumni for leadership roles on the board and its committees.
  • Help plan, coordinate, and attend events, meetings, or other activities as requested by academic and other functional units to leverage alumni engagement in service of our mission. This function may include classroom appearances, alumni and volunteer recognition banquets, and receptions. It will include working closely with the College’s student affairs, career services, and externship program teams to identify and help develop opportunities for alumni to return to campus to meet with students; recruit alumni volunteers and faculty for orientation and JDi residency programs and develop and manage alumni networks to advance externship and career placements of College of Law students and graduates.
  • Partner with the communications team to develop and deploy effective alumni communications and messaging across all channels. Provide timely responses to alumni inquiries and actively post, manage and participate in social media communities. Manage the alumni pages on the College’s website and the Law Alumni Weekend website. Generate alumni-centric content for the monthly Dean’s Dispatch and the College’s three magazines, including special event features, engagement impact reports and alumni stories and profiles.
  • Collaborate with the College’s development team to champion the College’s annual alumni giving program and implement appropriate donor recognition and stewardship strategies.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with the University’s Office of Alumni Engagement and its regional offices to engage SU alumni interested in College of Law updates, news, current events, etc. and to integrate College of Law alumni in SU alumni initiatives. Collaborate with the central alumni engagement team to create and promote innovative alumni engagement opportunities that are consistent with the overall mission and vision of the College of Law and SU.
  • Other duties as assigned.
