About the Department/Unit

The Library’s role in sharing information as widely as possible is central to American University’s culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion – and at the heart of what we do. Summary/Objective

The Library Operations Specialist ensures the security and well-being of University Library patrons, employees, and the Library collection by monitoring conditions and activities throughout the library, enforcing policies, providing information to Library visitors and responding to emergency situations. The incumbent provides first-line technological and application support for personal computers, Library audiovisual technology, public computers, and public printers in the Library. This position also handles routine facilities and housekeeping issues.
The incumbent will share the direct supervision two out of four operations service desks (Graduate Research Center and Information Desk or Receiving Room and Print Center) with another Library Operations Specialist, and will indirectly supervise the other service desks.

Essential Functions
  1. Patrol the Library building to enforce policies and maintain public printers and computers. Report emergency incidents to Public Safety and keep Library employees and patrons apprised of potential disruptions. Communicate housekeeping and maintenance issues to Facilities Management, and coordinate with appropriate offices to ensure the timely completion of projects and requested services with minimal interruption to Library operations and services.
  2. Supervise part-time student assistants assigned to the Operations Service Desks, with essential responsibilities to include recruiting, coaching, supervising, and evaluating student staff. Assist patrons with basic searches in the Library’s online catalog, and refer patrons to appropriate Library resources and service desks. Answer general questions about the Library, and communicate Library policies and services to patrons and the American University community.
  3. Troubleshoot issues public computers and public network printers, and provide related software application support to patrons. Perform triage on reported technological issues, and provide patrons with basic technological support for their electronic devices, referring more complex technological problems to appropriate department(s) for advanced support.
  4. Oversee the punctual opening of the Library building, and ensure that all equipment and technology are functional. Secure the building for 24/7 unstaffed nighttime hours, ensuring the security of the library collection and individuals inside.
  5. Compile, analyze and distribute statistics as well as detailed reports of services provided at the Information Desk, Print Center, and Graduate Research Center.
  6. Serve as a courier for campus deliveries. Participate in departmental meetings and projects as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Serve on other University or Library committees, task forces, or working groups.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
  • Full Time, 35 Hours/Week.
  • Specialist B.
  • Non-Exempt.
  • The ability to work evening (until 12:30 AM) and weekend hours is required.
  • The incumbent will work Tuesday - Saturday, with a remote day possible on Tuesdays if coverage allows for it.
  • The position is designated as “essential staff”, and the incumbent may be required to work when the University is closed.
Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
  • At least two years of customer service experience in a professional setting required.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Associate's degree or equivalent.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • General knowledge of campus facilities and locations is helpful.

  • Sound judgment with the ability to use discretion, work independently, and complete projects by deadlines.
  • Ability to collaborate on many different levels and resolve problems.
  • Attention to detail and excellent communication skills are essential.
  • Strong ability to prioritize and multi-task, including the ability to reprioritize tasks to resolve urgent issues that arise. Must demonstrate professionalism.
  • Intermediate knowledge of computer hardware and software.
  • Lifting, bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing and standing for long periods of time are occasionally required in this position to assist with moving furniture and other items during event setup/breakdown.
  • The incumbent must, therefore, be able to lift and push up to 50 pounds.
