The academic affairs unit in the VCU Office of the Provost, operating under the senior vice provost for academic affairs, provides leadership to critical areas tied to academic quality and student success. The academic program proposals specialist will report directly to the assistant vice provost for academic programs, and will facilitate the development of proposals for approval by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). These proposals will include but not be limited to degree and certificate program proposals and organizational change proposals.

The specialist will guide and provide training to VCU faculty and staff with varying levels of experience in developing, editing, refining and finalizing proposals, and will coordinate proposal advancement through the necessary VCU governance and SCHEV review and approval processes. The Specialist will meet directly with SCHEV staff to receive feedback on proposals, and will convey that feedback to the appropriate VCU stakeholders. This position will also ensure transparency and integrity through accurate reporting of proposal status and results in a variety of reports, including a dashboard.

This role is essential in supporting reimagined curriculum transformation, meeting the bold vision of the provost in the contexts of shared governance, VCU’s strategic priorities, the Virginia Plan for Higher Education and Virginia’s policies for higher education and the interests of accrediting bodies.

Minimum hiring standards:

A master’s degree earned from a regionally accredited institution (terminal degree preferred)
Holistic understanding of degree program development issues, including program curriculum design, learning outcomes assessment, resources needed to initiate and sustain a program, and research-based justification for new degree programs
Ability to guide faculty and administrative staff in preparing documents that are sensitive to regional, state and institutional policies and priorities
Excellent professional research, writing and editing skills, and the ability to write for a variety of academic and non-academic audiences
Superior project management and organizational skills, with demonstrated experience delivering projects on established timelines in the context of multiple competing priorities
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Passion for a high standard of excellence with continuous improvement, including a record of exemplary personal and professional integrity
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred hiring standards:

Terminal degree
Demonstrated ability to work successfully within the university community to implement necessary changes for academic programs
Experience working with regional accrediting organizations and/or state regulatory entities such as the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV)
Experience as a faculty member in an academic unit at a college or university.
