Position Summary: The Academic Theatre Technical Director is recommended for appointment by the Dean of Arts, Design, Humanities & Social Sciences and is charged with the Production Management and Technical Direction of Theatre Department events. This charge includes the integration and mentoring of students into the production process. Some design experience in areas of lighting, projections, master electrician or video is preferred.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor of Arts, or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre from an accredited program
A minimum 3 years experience working in a scene shop in an academic setting
Knowledge of technical direction in live theatre
Proficiency with standard shop equipment and strong carpentry skills
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
Strong instructional, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills
Ability to formulate and articulate procedures, expectations, and practices
Strong leadership, supervisory, motivation, time management, team-building, and organizational skills
Ability to motivate student learning and create a positive, challenging learning atmosphere

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master of Fine Arts
2-3 years experience working as master electrician, lighting/sound/projections designer in an academic setting
Experience working with high school or community college theatre students in technical production
Some design experience in areas of lighting, projections, sound or video
Experience with Vectorworks, AutoCAD or other digital drafting program

Position Details - Job duties include but are not limited to:

STUDENT SUCCESS - Provide quality education, recruitment, retention and mentoring of theatre interested students. Performance is acceptable when:

a. Basic Stagecraft, Technical Practicum courses are taught as needed in an effective and engaging manner.

b. Students are recruited, integrated, and mentored in all areas of technical production.

c. Intro to Theatre students are welcomed, trained and participate in the technical needs of production.

d. Extracurricular educational or professional opportunities are fostered, mentored, and maintained for student and program benefit.

MANAGEMENT / SUPERVISION - Use leadership skills to provide vision, collaboration and guidance to the faculty, staff and students involved in theatre. Performance is acceptable when:

a. The construction of all technical elements of the theatre program productions is successfully completed.

b. Annual production budgets are created, maintained, and ultimately adhered to.

c. Theatre program staff work in a positive, safe, and productive atmosphere.

d. Theatre program facilities, inventory and equipment are maintained in a safe and productive manner.

e. Theatre program production and academic calendars are created, shared, maintained, and followed.

f. Professional standards of shop safety, organization, cleanliness, and efficiency are met.

g. Departmental work calls are scheduled, communicated, organized, and managed in a safe, efficient, and productive manner.

h. Technical rehearsals are led with strong collaborative, organization and communication skills.

COMMUNICATION - Utilizes strong collaborative communication skills to create a flexible and positive artistic environment. Performance is acceptable when:

a. Regular productive collaboration exists at program meetings where attendance is required.

b. A strong positive partnership exists between Midwest Trust Center Productions and the Theatre program.

c. Open transparent communication is evident with faculty, staff, students, guest artists and administration.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this class. While 40-hour work weeks are the normal expectation, many weeks during the production schedule require night and weekend presence in excess of 40 hours.   • Physical Demands An atypical production environment with frequent lifting and carrying of items up to 60 lbs. or more; frequent twisting or bending at the waist or reaching overhead; frequent listening to and talking with students, faculty, and other staff members either in person or by telephone; frequent sitting at a desk or workstation using a computer display, keyboard, and mouse.
  • Mental Demands While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve non-routine and complex office administrative problems; use math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; work under intensive deadlines with frequent interruptions; and interact with faculty, staff, students, the public and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom may be dissatisfied or abusive individuals.
