This posting is a pool for those interested in teaching ESL (ENGL 08x), developmental (ENGL 090 and 095) and/or college level English (ENGL 121) as well as information literacy (INFO 100) courses offered at HCC. These courses cover a variety of reading and writing skills as well as researching and using information. Some ESL and developmental courses may require a lab instructor to assist with instruction and student feedback. The department chair/coordinators will review applicants for these positions when a need arises. The pool will be cleared annually in January, so please reapply if interested.

ENGL 090 and ENGL 095 are designed to teach students the academic literacy skills required for college-level coursework at a fundamental and advanced level. Students will read college-level texts, exercise a variety of comprehension strategies, and write for academic purposes.

ENGL 121 teaches students to develop and apply rhetorical knowledge for creating effective text-based communication. Students develop critical inquiry and multi-stage writing processes in order to contribute productively, effectively, and ethically to the social and collaborative practices of academic and other discourses.

INFO 100 teaches students a core of information literacy and critical thinking skills that will transfer to other coursework and will help them to reach academic and professional goals. Students will learn and refine strategies for college success and will strengthen their capacity for effective academic and professional communication and use of information resources.

ENGL 083, 084, 085, 086, and 087 are designed to teach academic reading, writing, and oral communication skills for multilingual students who speak English as a second or other language, using an integrated approach that supports overall language learning. Students will apply critical thinking skills and information literacy skills to analyze readings, engage in academic listening and speaking tasks, and write multi-paragraph compositions at a level of accuracy and fluency appropriate for intermediate and advanced learners of academic English.

Adjunct faculty may teach 1-3 courses each semester, depending on schedule and availability. At HCC, adjunct faculty are invited to participate in professional development (including Faculty and Professional Learning Community), and there may be opportunities to engage in certain faculty teams or special projects. There may be added opportunities to work as a lab instructor and/or tutor student in the English and ESL departments.
  • A master's degree or higher is required for most positions
  • Prior teaching experience preferred
  • Experience teaching Reading, Writing, Composition, Rhetoric, ESL, or Information Literacy preferred
  • Available to teach in a face-to-face and/or online classroom environment
  • Ability to learn to use a learning management system (Canvas) for course information, assignments, and grades
