California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), a distinguished public undergraduate and master’s level institution located in San Luis Obispo, California, seeks an innovative and collaborative leader to serve as the new dean of Extended, Professional and Continuing Education (EPaCE). The dean will join Cal Poly at a transformative time, working closely with the Office of the Provost and leadership within Academic Affairs to envision and enact a strategy to address the evolving market of extended, professional and continuing education. The dean will have the opportunity to create new programs and enhance the unit’s partnership across campus, especially within academic affairs. Building on the university’s unwavering commitment to student success, the dean will implement an innovative, student-focused academic experience and position the EPaCE unit at Cal Poly as a national and international leader in post-traditional and professional education.

 

 

 

As a unit within Academic Affairs, EPaCE is a leading provider of continuing education and training programs in San Luis Obispo County. EPaCE allows Cal Poly to extend the reach and impact of its Learn by Doing approach to education, advancing the university’s commitment to its community, meeting regional needs, and enriching the intellectual, civic, economic, and cultural life of the region and the state.

 

 

 

The dean of EPaCE has a remarkable opportunity to collaborate with fellow deans, department heads and chairs, and university, industry, and community leaders to identify and develop creative programming that enriches Cal Poly’s programs and broadens Cal Poly’s impact to meet the needs of a growing region and state. Cal Poly is committed to meeting these needs, expanding and thriving with a pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit, and the next dean of EPaCE will be an innovative and principled leader with a vision for the future of extended, professional and continuing education in the region, state, and beyond.

 

 

 

Qualifications and Characteristics

 

 

 

  • An earned doctorate or other terminal degree and established record of academic and management accomplishments. A demonstrated commitment to Cal Poly’s mission of fostering teaching, scholarship, and service in an environment in which students, staff, and faculty are partners in discovery. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

 

 

The appointee will demonstrate the ability to:

 

 

 

  • Support, strengthen and invest in Cal Poly’s programs and planning under their set of responsibilities by collaboratively promoting best practices. Serve as a strong advocate for maintaining and increasing high-quality programming. Serve as a strong advocate for shared governance. Serve as a strong advocate for student, faculty, and staff success. Lead and enable groups of people to face challenges and achieve results in complex conditions. Possess superior interpersonal and written/oral skills in communicating with campus and external constituents. Represent the university effectively. Possess qualities including integrity, transparency in decision-making, and an entrepreneurial spirit.
