Position Summary:
Willamette Academy is an out-of-school college access program at Willamette University that serves historically underrepresented students in higher education from the Salem-Keizer School District. Students apply and join the program the summer prior to 8th grade and continue through high school. Willamette Academy's mission is to educate, inspire, and empower students from historically underrepresented communities who have the desire to advance and achieve a higher education.

The Program Director role is dynamic, hands-on and forward facing to Academy students, university staff, families and the larger university community. This role oversees day-to-day programming such as supervision of university student staff, academic and mentor support to Academy students and their families, and plays an integral role in the curriculum and operations team. This position provides insight and strategy as to the educational and college access needs of Academy students and families.

JOB DUTIES
  • Maintain and analyze student school records (report cards, transcripts, school attendance, progress reports, etc. and transcripts) to evaluate educational progress and student academic needs, including homework help and enrichment activities
  • Regularly meet with students and families including Plan of Action (POA) meetings with students and families who are not meeting Academy expectations
  • Organize and run college visits throughout the year in Oregon and Washington
  • Participate in all academic year and summer programming
  • Assist the Executive Director with database management including, but not limited to, academic performance, attendance, college acceptance, and graduation
  • Make school visits and attend student conferences as needed
  • Co-develop college access curriculum for students and families
  • Act as the liaison between parents and the Academy
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and confidential materials. Safeguard the confidentiality of departmental or office administration by exercising discretion in communicating information to students and staff, and responsibly handling departmental records and files, grade reports, and similar confidential materials
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, establish working relationships with local teachers, administrators, counselors, and advisors to monitor student academic progress and establish individualized academic plans
  • Serve as instructor and teaching assistant during summer residency programming and monthly Saturday sessions, as needed. Deliver lessons aligned to curriculum goals and experiences. Meet with instructors teaching assistants and other staff to plan delivery and monitoring of lessons
  • Develop alumni engagement systems to follow, track, and support former Academy students at Willamette and other colleges and universities
  • Collaborate with Executive Director to create programming for summer camp including hiring of university student staff as well as identifying professors and community partners as instructors
  • Work with nominations team to recruit, review applications, and interview 7th grade applicants
  • Works with Executive Director to hire, train and supervise university student staff mentors/program assistants, train and supervise Willamette Academy Mentors, and run weekly staff meetings
  • Contribute to the larger campus community and its access and support goals to further fulfill the Academy's mission (including panels, class presentations, strategic planning, etc.)
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of program needs


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required. A focus in education or school counseling is preferred.
  • 2 years of training or experience that provides knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential functions of the position, including administering or coordinating programs
  • Experience working with middle and high school aged youth and sensitivity to the educational challenges unique to students of color, low-income students, and potential first generation college students is required
  • Strong computer skills with particular knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher. Willingness and ability to learn new technologies associated with the job
  • Knowledge of college preparation and admission processes Ability to set priorities for tasks to meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail, and to develop systems and procedures to increase efficiency of the program mission.
  • Ability to work productively with students and faculty in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and effectively interact with a wide variety of people in a manner that positively portrays the University and its programs, personnel, and philosophies
  • Flexibility to work on some weekends and evenings for academic sessions and program related responsibilities
  • Ability to reside in Oregon by the first day of employment or otherwise perform work primarily in Oregon


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred
  • Experience in working within a University setting
  • Experience administering and coordinating programs in an educational setting
  • Experience in performing outreach work for an educational institution or organization


Salary Range: $45,000 - $50,592

Typical Work Schedule

Standard office work week; some weekend work required.
