Position Summary:
Monmouth University is seeking applications for a Safety Officer I in the University Police department.

The Monmouth University Police Department (MUPD) is the primary department charged with creating a safe and secure environment at Monmouth University. MUPD operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The department consists of professional university police, safety officers, dispatchers, staff, and administrators dedicated to providing the best available resources to our community. Safety officers work in several areas, including the main campus, the Graduate Center at Monmouth Park Corporate Center, and the University Bluffs in Long Branch.

Required Degree, License or Certifications:
Valid Automobile Driver's License in your state of principal residence

Required Skills or Software:
Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, Must be able to treat confidential and sensitive information appropriately

High School diploma or equivalent.

Ability to work on all shifts (standard work week is 40 hours, regular shifts are 8 hours), during various hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Overtime is mandatory.

Physical demands are more than those for sedentary or medium-heavy work; must be able to remain on feet for a minimum of eight hours at a time with breaks.

The position requires moderate physical activity. Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb, balance, walk, and run. Must be able to restrain, lift and carry adults of varying weights.

Must be able to exert up to thirty pounds of force frequently or constantly lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Must operate various machines and equipment, including but not limited to automobile, office equipment, radio, telephone, etc.

Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperature and loud noises. Work involves moderate exposure to hazards and physical risks to personal safety. Must be physically fit and able to defend one’s self or others from attack or physical assault.

Must possess strong critical thinking skills; ability to handle sensitive and challenging situations with professionalism and compassion; ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a diverse team; display sensitivity to the unique role that security plays in a university setting

Effective oral and written communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Firm conflict resolution, negotiation, collaboration, and facilitation skills and experience.

Computer and written skills consistent with completing detailed and comprehensive reports on computer-based reporting systems; must have meticulous attention to detail.

Must be reliable and able to work independently under established guidelines; must be able to perform duties at night and during inclement weather, including rain, snow, extreme heat, or cold.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and excellent driving record. The final candidate must complete a background check.



Preferred Qualifications:
Associate’s degree, two years of college, trade school, or equivalent education; Bachelor’s degree highly preferred; Higher Education public safety experience is a plus.

Experience and commitment to working with and supporting diverse communities. The ability to speak a second language is a plus.
