The Health & Wellness Center at Macalester College is seeking to hire a Mental Health Counselor. This position provides developmentally appropriate, individual short-term counseling, crisis intervention, consultation and referral to Macalester Students as a part of the integrated counseling/medical care team in the Hamre Center for Health and Wellness. Develops and facilitates group counseling. Serves a diverse, young adult, college student population, with a commitment to gender affirming and culturally responsive care. Works as a collaborative team member of the division of student affairs. Offers collaborative outreach and programming as part of campus-wide education and support. 

About the Health & Wellness Center: The Laurie Hamre Center (also referred to as The Health & Wellness (HWC))  offers integrated medical, counseling, health promotion and sexual respect services and programs for all students and serves as a resource supporting the entire Macalester community’s effort to build a healthy campus. We are dedicated to providing care, support, and connection to resources for students of all identities.

Mission

The mission of the Laurie Hamre Center for Health & Wellness is to create a healthy community by working with students to achieve physical, emotional and social well-being while promoting the value of life-long learning and health.

Responsibilities: 

  • Provides short-term, individual and group mental health counseling. Provides referral guidance and consultation services to students, parents and the larger campus community.  Provides crisis intervention including drop-in hours and other forms of crisis response coverage. Participates in the Division of Student Affairs and other campus committees as assigned. Attends All Staff meetings and provides collaborative community education programming, trainings and/or outreach services. Prepares appropriate documentation and reports. Maintains ongoing professional development and participates in campus life.

Qualifications: 

  • 1-3 years experience providing mental health services in the college counseling context and assessment and treatment of mental health conditions. Expertise in one or more of the following areas strongly preferred: gender affirming care for trans/genderqueer/nonbinary young adults, counseling care for international students, and/or treatment concerns related to alcohol and other drugs. Experience developing appropriate counseling strategies with individual clients.  Able to assess data and create strategic responses. Able to develop workshops, run groups; understanding of planning and assessment. Able to maintain counseling records, develop and send letters, memos - both electronic and hard copy.  Experience with program promotion and marketing, use of social media, creative design platforms, etc
  • Must be licensed, or elligible for licensure in the State of Minnesota for independent practice of mental health counseling (Psychology, social work, counseling, marriage family therapy, etc.)

Compensation & Benefits: 

This is a full-time, 0.75 FTE position, with full time hours Mid August-Mid May, offering Macalester’s Benefits Package and an annual compensation of $53,000-$57,400.
