Summary:

The VCU L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs invites applications for Director, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute (GEHLI) . Reporting to the Associate Dean for Research and Outreach, this position will work to advance the institute's vision, mission, and values through its development of high potential and high-performing employees from entry to executive levels in the university, and other public, private, and nonprofit sectors and agencies. The ideal candidate will be one who embraces values to celebrate and advance the legacy of Dr. Grace E. Harris through the work of the institute. The Director will have responsibility for the organizational success of the Institute and its portfolio of programs. The Director will facilitate experiential, hands-on programming by applying both established frameworks, philosophies, and approaches with current research and best practices in an environment that is continuously responsive and adaptive to the needs of a diverse workforce.

Established in 1999, The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute promotes the development of current and emerging leaders in academic institutions; other public, private and nonprofit organizations; and communities honoring the legacy of Dr. Grace E. Harris. Typical Duties:

Leadership and Management Responsibilities

Directing the overall operations of GEHLI, including identifying goals, providing leadership, management, and support for institute staff, and assisting in developing and implementing processes and procedures.

• Provide leadership, management, and support to ensure excellence for a portfolio of programs for various stakeholders, including, university faculty and administrators, state and local government leaders, and community stakeholders.

• Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with the university, community, government, and civic officials to sustain existing programming and garner new opportunities.

• Oversee institute budget including setting financial goals and outcomes for the institute and its programs.

• Other duties as assigned.

Program Responsibilities:

O versee curriculum development for the institute’s portfolio of programs and conference.

• Direct, develop, and implement new and existing programming.

• Keep current with leadership development theory, methods, publications, and initiatives to ensure ongoing programmatic excellence and effective delivery of services emphasizing innovative training and development processes and curriculum in new and existing programming.

• Participate in and support campus and community, local, regional, and state activities that enhance the visibility of the Leadership Institute.

• Foster a plan to develop, build and strengthen relationships with faculty and university administration, other state personnel to program and institute goals.

• Detailed tracking of various program components; therefore, strong organizational skills are critical.

Knowledge Management and Dissemination:

Work with staff to develop necessary systems, and processes to ensure high-quality project management to support the facilitation, collection, and dissemination of program knowledge.

• Contribute to partnership proposals, program/grant reports, and conference presentations to promote the outreach and visibility of the institute.

• Manage dissemination for a range of Institute projects and initiatives through various modalities including website, reports, briefs, brochures, and press releases.

Minimum Hiring Standards:

• Master's degree and 3 to 5 years of relevant professional experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

• Supervisory experience.

• Demonstrated record of designing and delivering leadership curriculum for diverse stakeholders.

• Strong written and verbal skills with the ability to relate to varying audiences.

• Skilled in securing new relationships and working and communicating comfortably with diverse constituents.

• An accomplished thought leader in the leadership development field.

• Understanding of principles of mentorship and coaching for high-performing professionals.

• Knowledge of and experience with personality or leadership assessment tools, interpretation and feedback, and multi-rater assessment tools (i.e., 360 assessments, DISC, Myers-Briggs, Strengths).

• Excellent rapport-building skills are essential.

• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Hiring Standards:

• Doctorate in a social science field that stresses leadership, organizational behavior, and individual and community capacity building such as public administration, public policy, or social work, and education.

• 8-10 years of experience working in Leadership Development.

• Experience in supporting adult learning and leadership development.

• Certification as an executive coach.

• Classroom teaching experience in social science.

• A broad base of experience with diverse groups is preferred.

• Experience in cultivating relationships with other university personnel, students, and public and community leaders.

• Ability to perform gracefully under pressure and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines in a self-directed manner.

• Excellent organizational skills with innovative, creative, and detail-orientation.

• Ability to work in a team-based environment consisting of both full-time and part-time employees and student workers to advance the mission of the Institute.

• Requires approximately 10 percent travel time for community meetings, participant recruitment, and program implementation.

• Availability to work non-traditional hours on program and event days.
