ANIMAL CARE SUPERVISOR

Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the College of Letters and Science Animal Program Director, the Animal Care Supervisor is responsible for supervising the operations of multiple small animal varieties. The successful applicant will perform a wide range of duties relating to the care of research animals and maintenance of animal facilities. These duties include performance of animal care duties and participation in weekend/holiday rotations as needed.

Responsibilities:

Supervises Animal Care Technicians in animal care procedures and/or performs animal care duties as needed to ensure compliance with animal care regulations, and works collaboratively with partners to support research and instruction.

• 30% Oversees animal care operations, reporting animal health and welfare concerns to veterinary staff and reporting any equipment failure or facilities problems to the appropriate staff members
• 5% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
• 20% Trains animal care and research staff in appropriate practices and standard operating procedures, and schedules employees to ensure proper staffing
• 5% Oversees animal health surveillance programs and coordinates submission of samples with diagnostic labs
• 10% Ensures proper stock of animal care items, annual certification of HEPA filtered equipment, and hazardous material signage throughout the lab
• 5% Administers all university and government policies related to animal care operations and reports matters of research non-compliance to the appropriate authorities
• 15% Performs duties of Animal Care Technicians such as maintenance and oversight of animal health, performance of tests, animal husbandry, and animal biosafety as needed
• 5% Prepares, completes, audits, and documents animal care procedures, assessments, and medication administration according to established research protocols, rules and regulations
• 5% Serves as the subject matter expert to unit leadership regarding unit operations and functions

Qualifications:

Required:
-Minimum 3 years of experience working in an animal care/research setting providing for the care of animal colonies
-Knowledge of animal research regulatory requirements
-Experience supporting department/laboratory research
-Ability to learn husbandry techniques for various research species and train personnel in their care
-Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
-Commitment to fostering a respectful, effective, and collegial work environment through a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion

Preferred:
-Prior experience managing/supervising animal care staff
-American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification

The position requires an individual with strong communication skills, effective interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to make decisions regarding animal husbandry and daily staffing to ensure compliance with animal care regulations. The Animal Care Manager is responsible for maintaining appropriate records and providing assistance to principal investigators.

Although this position is embedded in the Department of Integrative Biology, the College of Letters and Science (L&S) Animal Program and this position provide support to animal research at the College level. Primarily this support is for the Departments of Integrative Biology and Psychology.

L&S is home to the arts & humanities, the natural, physical, and biological sciences, the social sciences and the computer, data, and information sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with responsibility for approximately 70 departments, centers, and support units.
