Position Summary
The Director of the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) is critical to the mission of the CTE to transform teaching through mentoring, innovative practices, collaboration, scholarship, and advocacy, as well as Rice’s ongoing efforts to expand diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in the classroom. The Director develops and implements teaching and learning resources and programs for faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students and plays a key role in directing outreach including communications, marketing and events. The Director works very closely with the Chair of the Faculty Fellows and faculty fellow representatives of the academic schools/divisions of the CTE to develop and maintain robust partnerships with academic and administrative departments and with student associations to develop and support teaching and learning initiatives. In addition, the director is responsible for leading, facilitating, and supporting research and best practices in teaching and learning. The Director serves as a key liaison with university stakeholders and other constituency groups including administrators, faculty, graduate students, staff of collaborative offices, and development and alumni. The Director leads key administrative and financial functions including administrative support, human resources, budget planning and management, space and operations.
Ideal candidates will have excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, and facilitate a collaborative approach to executing the mission of the Center for Teaching Excellence.
This Director reports directly to the Sr. Associate Dean of Undergraduates and has flexible work arrangements.
Essential Functions
- Develops and implements strategic plan(s) for CTE by providing vision, expertise, and direction for the CTE and by collaborating with the Chair of the Faculty Fellows of the CTE and CTE faculty fellow representatives from schools/divisions
- Makes decisions that establish specific programs, services, and objectives in the direction or operation of the CTE
- Directs staff of the CTE and provides leadership to achieve goals and the day-to-day operations
- Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, and professional development and accountable for the performance of employees
- Influences leadership on specific recommendations for current operations and future development. Develops multi-year operational and budget plans
- Takes lead on end of year University Awards Ceremony - coordinates with the Office of the President, Office of the Provost, and academic schools/divisions
- Oversees the Graduate Certificate in Teaching & Learning including teaching requisite courses
- Oversees undergraduate Student Taught Courses (STCs) program
- Engages with External Advisory Board and Development and Alumni Relations in fundraising for priorities in the Center for Teaching Excellence
- Meets regularly with the Chair of the Faculty Fellows and Sr. Associate Dean of Undergraduates
- Works closely with the Sr. Associate Dean of Undergraduates to support collaborative efforts in the Division of the Dean of Undergraduates
- Bachelor's Degree
- Five years of working experience in higher education
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills including conflict resolution
- Excellent planning and organizational skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong financial expertise in budget planning and financial forecasting
- Strong negotiation and interpersonal skills
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- PhD or other Doctoral Degree
- Related experience in college teaching and/or in faculty development
- Experience at Rice University
- Strong knowledge of industry standards and/or scholarship on teaching & learning
- Experience developing and implementing university-wide programs
- Experience engaging a wide variety of constituents including administrators, faculty, staff, students, community members, and colleagues from peer institutions
