Laboratory Safety Specialist I

About the Opportunity

Responsibilities:

The Laboratory Safety Specialist I (LSS-I) reports to the Chemical and Process Safety Program Manager in the Office of Academic and Research Safety (formerly the Office of Environmental Health and Safety). The LSS-I is tasked with maintaining day to day activities associated with the Laboratory Safety Program. With varying degrees of supervision form senior laboratory safety personnel, the LSS-I will evaluate compliance activities, assist with collaboratively executing lab safety programs, and encouraging continuous process improvement efforts at all levels of academic and research safety.

The LSS-I will possess excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to effectively promote laboratory safety concepts within the academic and research enterprise including regularly engaging Principal Investigators (PIs) and research staff.

The LSS-I must be self-motivated and technically skilled in the area of chemical safety and chemical management.

Under the direction of senior laboratory safety personnel, the LSS-I will review of low risk research protocols, and risk assessments; assist with the development and delivery of classroom and hands-on lab safety training; and general lab safety consultation and outreach.

The LSS-I will participate, as needed, with the Northeastern Emergency Response Team, and regularly be on-call outside of regular business hours to assist with the response to laboratory accidents involving chemical releases and will provide written evaluations of chemical spills and be responsible for restocking of supplies used in chemical spill clean-ups.

The LSS-I will update manuals, policies and procedures as directed by Office of Academic and Research Safety (OARS) leadership, audit teaching and research laboratories, contribute to research protocol review, and assist with ensuring compliance with hazardous waste requirements in laboratories and storage areas located in research buildings.

Qualifications :

Bachelor's degree required in one of the physical sciences, life sciences, environmental science, engineering, applied health science, or other applicable degree required, Master's degree in one of the above areas preferred.

Minimum of 2 years of demonstrated experience incorporating applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and best management practices into laboratory operations.

Demonstrated knowledge of environmental and hazardous material/waste principles as well as ability to understand and interpret complex written regulations and technical reports.

Demonstrated knowledge of common lab processes, equipment, and chemical properties found in a laboratory setting. General awareness of process safety requirements in a research laboratory setting.

Ability to compile and present instructions as well as ability to clearly and concisely express ideas orally and in writing.

Excellent coordination and communication skills to effectively negotiate and appropriately influence the safety behavior of teaching and research faculty, lab workers and other staff, and students engaged in high-risk activities.

Proficient at standard computer software packages including Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook in performing work assignments.

Experience with or ability to learn and utilize a Learning Management System (LMS) such as BlackBoard, Canvas, as well as a data management platform such as BioRaft, to implement safety training and other safety program management needs.

Excellent customer service skills. Excellent time and project management skills, including planning, prioritizing, and scheduling multiple ongoing projects including the ability to delegate to direct reports.

Be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment as well as lift to 50 lbs.

Work in a variety of physical environments where hazardous materials or equipment are in storage or use.

Interest in certification as a Certified Hazardous Material Manager, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or Certified Safety Professional desired.
