Job Description
Syracuse University College of Law seeks to fill the position of Professor of Practice, a job with both teaching and administrative duties.
This is a full-time, non-tenure-eligible residential faculty position.
Responsibilities include academic instruction of courses (e.g., legal writing and advanced litigation skills) which qualify for experiential learning under the standards set by the ABA .
Directing externship programs within Central New York and other geographic areas, as well as teaching seminars within these programs.
Overseeing the College of Law Pro Bono Program.
Directing the Pro Bono Scholars Program, an experiential opportunity whereby students launch early into practice and undertake pro bono work for academic credit.
Performing administrative functions related to program coordination.
Qualifications
• Teach experiential courses such as legal writing and advanced litigation skills.
• Develop and/or update a class syllabus in compliance with College of Law policies.
• Order the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date.
• Prepare lectures, projects, and other student assignments.
• Maintain regularly scheduled office hours.
• Present instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course.
• Meet all designated class periods.
• Submit all grades according to the College of Law and University regulations.
• Grade student assignments and exams in a timely manner.
• Provide departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations.
• Build a positive rapport with students and faculty.
• Fulfill committee service requirements.
• Direct externship programs within Central New York and other geographic areas, as well as teach seminars within these programs.
• Oversee the College of Law Pro Bono Program and direct the Pro Bono Scholars Program
• Perform administrative functions related to externship and pro bono program coordination.

- Candidates should have an excellent academic record and should hold a JD degree.
- Preferred post-JD experience and credentials should include significant legal practice in diverse areas of law.
- Teaching experience and a demonstrated commitment to excellent classroom teaching are required. Prior law school teaching is preferred.
- A candidate’s ability to contribute to the diversity of the College of Law community is a preferred qualification for all positions.
