Deputy Civil Rights & Title IX Coordinator

The Deputy Civil Rights & Title IX Coordinator supports Middlebury's efforts to ensure that Middlebury maintains an environment free from discrimination based on gender, disability, and all other legally protected identity characteristics, while helping to strengthen a culture that supports a safe and respectful learning, working and living environment. The individual in this position will carry out the duties of their role through a critical lens while providing intersectional identity-based support which works to close gaps and create equity.

As a member of the Office of Civil Rights & Title IX (CRTIX) and reporting to the Civil Rights and Title IX Coordinator, the Deputy Civil Rights & Title IX Coordinator supports the Middlebury community by providing intake services for individuals studying, working, or visiting Vermont campus/affiliated programs, including summer language schools, as well as Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey who report incidents of discrimination, harassment, and/or violence.

This position will also serve as a designee, when deemed necessary and appropriate, for the Civil Rights & Title IX Coordinator.

Essential Functions:
Report Intake, Supportive Measures, Investigations
Be initial point of contact for intake of reports regarding discrimination, harassment, and/or interpersonal under the purview of CRTIX on Vermont campus/programs;
• Be initial point of contact for intake of reports regarding discrimination, harassment, and/or interpersonal under the purview of CRTIX for the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey;
• Assist with investigation coordination and facilitation;
• Maintain thorough record keeping and documentation in our data management software/systems;
• Assist the Civil Rights & Title IX Coordinator in serving individuals who have experienced discrimination/and or violence through coordination of resources and accommodations;
• Assist with annual reporting statistics gathering and documentation;
• CRTIX reporting;
• CRTIX compliance, including support of institutional efforts outside of the CRTIX office (eg. Athletics, Clery reporting);
• Serve as a designee for the Civil Rights and Title IX Coordinator if/when required. This would include intake for reports, as well as executing functions of the systems for reporting and responding to complaints, and collaborates with appropriate Middlebury offices and representatives, including the larger Middlebury portfolio, to ensure:
• Support and resources are offered to those involved;
• An investigation and adjudication take place in an impartial and timely manner;
• The process follows federal and state law as well as Middlebury policy

Collaboration and Supervision
Work closely with Public Safety, educational departments, Disability Resource Center, Health and Counseling Services, Violence Prevention & Advocacy partners, The Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (OIDEI) division partner, and other campus community partners to ensure routine dissemination of information on discrimination, sexual and interpersonal violence resources to the campus community;
• Maintain positive relationships with campus departments and community agencies specific to collaborative efforts in relation to discrimination, harassment, sexual and/or interpersonal violence;
• Supervise CRTIX interns as assigned;
• Assist, as appropriate, with training of paraprofessional staff (Residence Hall Directors, Resident Assistants, Community Advocates, and Orientation Leaders);
• Assist as appropriate with efforts to remedy and assess equity gaps in Middlebury portfolios.

General Responsibilities:
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

BA Required; JD or Masters in a related field preferred (e.g., education, social work, counseling, community leadership)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
• Understanding and sensitivity to the effects of trauma caused by sexual violence and harassment.
• Trauma-informed training background with a holistic approach to service.
• Knowledge of the challenges facing individuals from various underrepresented and marginalized populations, and experience providing culturally competent and inclusive support services.
• Knowledge of the ways intersecting systems of oppression impact harassment, discrimination and interpersonal violence.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and social justice.
• Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communications skills, including training and presentation skills.
• Ability to exercise good judgment and to manage sensitive information.
• Ability to work independently, under pressure, and to meet deadlines.
• Experience with intake of reports related to discrimination, harassment, and/or violence.
• Effective project management, organizational and analytical skills.
• Ability to interpret applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
• Experience with assisting or conducting administrative or criminal investigations.
• Ability to build trust and work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community partners and to balance the multiple, varying interests of diverse stakeholders.
• 2 – 3 year of experience in case management, intake, and response working directly in support of discrimination, harassment, and violence, counseling, social work, public service, advocacy, human resources or similar fields. Knowledge and experience with restorative practices is highly valuable. Knowledge and experience working in higher education preferred.
• Over 5 years experience in extensive community engagement, coordination, and education for systemic cultural change preferred.
