Department Summary
The Office of the Provost (OtP) upholds, provides leadership on, and carries out the academic mission of the University. In service to this mission, the office: promotes and sustains the highest standards in teaching, research and service; fosters and advocates for faculty; focuses on student success; promotes a respectful work environment, equity and inclusion, and a family-friendly workplace; supports and coordinates matters that pertain to faculty and academics, including hiring, retention, promotion, and tenure processes; advances university outreach to the community, academic extension, and internationalization.
Position Summary
The program manager supports programs within the Office of the Provost (OTP). The program manager works closely and collaboratively with colleagues inside the Office of the Provost and across campus. The program manager's work supports efforts related to one of the Office of the Provost's key operational areas: (1) academic operations (e.g., initiatives related to academics and student success, the allocation and development of physical space on campus, and support for the development of the OtP shared business services team); or (2) academic affairs (e.g., initiatives related to faculty and academic unit success; faculty hiring, review, and retention; and support for the development of inclusive teaching excellence, leadership, and mentorship opportunities). The program manager's work involves program support and management, project management, and administrative support.

The PM must regularly exercise independent judgment and comprehensive knowledge of the University of Oregon, its programs, and personnel. The person in the position handles and is involved in many sensitive and confidential issues; is responsible for fostering positive relationships both internal and external to the Office of the Provost, and is expected to manage multiple, complex tasks and projects and programs, each with their own stakeholders, timelines and deadlines, and deliverables. Assignments may include confidential or sensitive information, including information necessary to support a personnel search or performance evaluation-related process.
Minimum Requirements
  • Five years of experience in program or project management within a large, complex organization.
    Professional Competencies
  • Strong communication: Effective and professional communication abilities. Ability to comprehend, analyze, and interpret complex information and to effectively present information to various university stakeholders including senior leadership, faculty, students, and staff.
  • Thoughtful problem-solving orientation: Ability to solve problems and respond to a variety of options in complex situations.
  • Analytical and solution-oriented: Analytical and quantitative skills with proven experience in developing strategic solutions. Resourceful, innovative thinking, and demonstrated ability to improve administrative processes.
  • Collaborative: Expertise in working effectively and collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Proven ability to be effective in an interdisciplinary team environment. Ability to manage stressful situations appropriately and to use sound judgment and initiative, particularly as it relates to handling sensitive and/or confidential information.
  • Ability to engage in a thoughtful and solution-oriented manner in difficult and complex conversations.
  • Effective time management and organization: Proven program or project management, time management, and organizational skills. This includes the ability to manage multiple, complex tasks and projects and programs, each with their own stakeholders, timelines and deadlines, and deliverables; the ability to anticipate needs, prioritize work and work independently without supervision. Excellent attention to detail. Ability to handle frequent interruptions and shifting priorities. Self-motivated, punctual, reliable.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, OneDrive, Teams) and project management tools (e.g., Smartsheet).
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Project or program management experience in a higher education environment.
  • Thorough understanding of an institution of higher education and related organizational structures, policies, and procedures; emerging issues in higher education; and familiarity with relevant rules, policies, and laws.
  • Bachelor's degree.
