Job Summary:

The Babcock Hall Dairy Store is part of the UW Babcock Dairy Plant which is one of a few university dairy plant operations in the United States. This operation serves as a dairy industry leader by linking the University faculty, staff, students and the dairy/food industries in order to address key issues resulting in the transfer of technology and communication of information.

Under general supervision of Store Manager, provide customer service to Babcock Hall Dairy Store patrons. Assist with related administrative and lead work activities such as inventory, scheduling, supervision of students, cash accounting and sanitation of Babcock Hall Dairy Store operations. Incumbent is also expected to help with the basic activities performed by all store personnel. This position is responsible for providing cross coverage and overseeing operations between the Dairy Store, Dairy Plant and the Dairy office working in conjunction with the Food Service Manager and other dairy employees.

Responsibilities:

Prepares food and completes related tasks according to quality and safety standards to ensure customer satisfaction and achieve departmental food service goals.
  • 15% Performs routine food preparation activities such as portioning, chopping food, and serving food to customers
  • 15% Assists and guides student workers
  • 35% Prepares a variety of basic dishes such as sandwiches and salads, and assists in the preparation of more complex dishes
  • 15% Greets customers, answers questions, and provides basic information regarding food preparation and associated activities
  • 10% Cleans, inspects, and maintains kitchen equipment and work areas
  • 10% Adheres to federal, state, and local food safety regulations, policies, and procedures

Qualifications:

Preferred 1-2 years food service experience
The ideal candidate will display the following characteristics:
1. Excellent oral/written communication skills, good interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively as a team member.
2. Knowledge of standard over-the-counter sales procedures such as proper handling and wrapping, change making, proper customer courtesy and etiquette.
3. Knowledge of visual product specifications and an ability to recognize mold and other product defects.
4. Keep inventory records, take catalog phone orders, prepare orders for pickup.
5. Knowledge of sanitation, hygiene, and good housekeeping procedure.
6. Ability to sit, stand, stoop, walk and reach for up to 8 hours per shift.
7. Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
8. Ability to push and/or pull carts weighing up to 200 pounds.
9. Requires repetitive hand, arm, wrist, and back motion for several hours at a time.

40 hours weekly. Days and hours may vary as needed. Schedule will be discussed.
