Position Summary: The overall purpose of this job is to serve as Pellissippi State Community College’s certifying official for student veteran benefits and plan and direct the college’s support programs for student veterans at Pellissippi State. The coordinator, in conjunction with the Veteran’s Support Committee, are charged with the development and enhancement of services for Veterans, service members, their dependents and survivors.

Essential Functions:

50% Ensure successful VA certifying for all students receiving benefits. Including advising student veterans with an understanding of their financial aid and VA benefit requirements. Establish relationships with other SCOs across the state and the State VA liaison.

20% Develop and implement programming for Veterans, service members, their dependents and survivors including both academic and non-academic needs to the extent the program supports student veteran success in collaboration with the Veteran Success Committee. Provide advocacy and assistance in support of student issues and challenges.

15% Maintain required VA reporting records for the specified time period and ensure successful VA and THEC auditing processes each year.

10% Develop awareness programs and workshops to educate faculty and staff on Veteran issues as they relate to higher education. Hire, train and supervise 3 to 4 VA work study students.

5% Participate in professional development as needed to maintain ability to perform the certifying duties and be aware of current VA regulations.

Key Results Areas: The measurable outcomes expected from this position include: maintaining clear and concise records in compliance with federal rules for certifying student veteran benefits. Provide programming to support the academic success of student veterans; provide social opportunities for student veterans to interact with other veterans and the student body at large; provide academic advising for student veterans and dependents with respect to their financial aid benefit package; collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Students on emergency fund opportunities; participate in college wide events; maintain the student veteran center

Job Requirements:

· Bachelor’s degree

· Two (2) years in higher education, experience with serving Veterans a plus

Part-time work experience is calculated at 50% credit of full-time work experience

Special Skills/Application of Knowledge:

Knowledge of issues faced by student veterans. Some knowledge of veterans’ benefits requirements is helpful. Knowledge of advising student veterans. Ability to engage in the college’s mission and values.

Scope of Responsibility: The financial impact of this position is that as the college’s funding formula will include the success of student veterans as a measure of the college’s success, if the coordinator is successful, the college’s funding may increase. If the coordinator is not successful, the college’s funding may decrease.

Complexity & Creativity: Certifying benefits for student veterans is complex. The coordinator will need to be up to date and understand all requirements related to the various benefit packages available for our student veterans. This position also requires some planning for outreach programs that will require creativity and organization. There are many student veterans enrolled at PSCC this requires commitment and organization to maintain compliance, monitor degree programs and support student veteran success.

Budgetary: The coordinator may be responsible for requesting and allocating funds for the Patriots Club through SEAL; Also funds for programming activities for student veterans.

Physical Demands: The job will require that the incumbent remain stationary for extended periods of time and several times per year. The person will need to be able to occasionally move around campus and to off-campus functions to attend meetings and events.

Hazards: Lifting of and hauling materials could cause injury. Standing for extended periods of time can cause injury as well.

Pay Rate: $41,870 - $51,660.00/per year. Pay will be determined based on related work experience above required. To be considered in determining pay, all related work experience must be listed on the application.
