Wartburg Theological Seminary—a vibrant and innovative seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America—is seeking an Academic Dean. Wartburg invites application materials from candidates with an academic background in any theological discipline, and experience in theological education.
Wartburg Seminary is looking for an Academic Dean with the following commitments, skills and priorities:
- The commitment to furthering a climate of inclusion and welcome for all students, particularly those from communities historically marginalized in theological education Ability to support and further Wartburg’s strong community of educational formation that is worship-centered Facility to continue to lead the faculty in the ongoing development of innovative hybrid models of instruction A collaborative leadership style to be a strong partner for the other colleagues in the administrative cabinet Extensive experience in, and a commitment to, theological education for the sake of the proclamation of the gospel in the world and the well-being of the neighbor and the stranger A proven track-record of scholarship and effective teaching Ability to represent Wartburg Seminary well with ELCA and ecumenical/interfaith partners A strong commitment to the future of the church, and demonstrative excitement to be a part of the work the Holy Spirit is doing to create something new in the church today
With these gifts and skills, the primary duties of the Academic Dean are as follows. The Dean serves as the chief academic officer of the seminary, with primary oversight and leadership of all academic and certificate programs, various assessment tools, processes and procedures, accreditation matters and curriculum assessment and evaluation. The Academic Dean is the chief steward of the faculty, deploying the faculty effectively and efficiently, for the sake of the mission of the seminary. The Dean serves as a primary administrator of the seminary, serving as a member of the President’s Cabinet, the staff liaison to the Academic Matters Committee of the Board of Directors, and overseeing the library and educational technology. Finally, the Dean serves as a primary visionary for the seminary, engaging regularly in research, scholarship, imagination, and innovation; and along with the President, the Cabinet, and the Board of Directors, seeking to understand and interpret the landscape of church and theological education. A major component of the work of the Dean is to support and further the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts of the seminary.
