VCU University Relations is seeking to hire an Employee Communications Manager. The Employee Communications Manager will serve as a leader of strategic communications
activities from inception to completion including but not limited to communications strategy
development, budget planning, communications planning and implementation with management oversight. The position is an integrator of multimedia communications for internal and external audiences. The position will work closely with senior-level leadership and business partners from across the health system and university.

Primary purpose and responsibilities:

· Advances the strategic vision of University Relations

· Strategic communications planning and execution in an academic health care setting, strong writing and verbal skills, knowledge of Associated Press Style, management skills, ability to multitask and prioritize in a rapidly changing environment

· Manages budget and fiscal year planning for assigned area

· Works in and fostering a diverse environment comprised of health care providers, faculty, staff, and students at VCU and VCU Health

· Creates effective written, oral and web content across internal and external audiences and platforms

· Customizes messages for health system and university audiences, including faculty, staff, health care providers and team members

· Works and communicates with faculty and team members at all levels and in all locations via phone, e-mail, Zoom, and face-to-face to professionally achieve results

· Builds and maintains solid relationships with internal customers and vendors

· Conducts research and fact finding effectively

· Practices political sensitivity

· Works collaboratively between the practice plan, medical school, university and health system

· Maintains confidentiality and knowledge of HIPAA, FERPA and other relevant privacy rules and policies

· Crafts organization or company-wide communications, including intranet content, internal memos and presentations

· Directly supervises staff including day-to-day management, annual performance appraisals and development plans

· Responsible for overall staffing plan of assigned area

Performance Expectations:

· Lead the development and implementation of communications and related strategies that elevate VCU Health System as a great place to work and regional leaders in health care, research and education

· Plans and provides pragmatic oversight and operational support of strategic employee initiatives

· Analyze complex communications and marketing research data, develop strong strategic insights and plans to support effective and measurable communications

· Responsible for communication initiatives that engage and align employees, managers and provider audiences to the organization’s mission, vision and goals; supports internal brand building and alignment

· Develops and reviews communication materials for internal and external audiences that engage and inform team member, faculty and clinical providers

· Diverse writing assignments related to employee-based communication goals and strategic initiatives, this involves working with different business segments including, Human Resources, Finance, Information Technology, clinical teams and more

· Responsible for the implementation of multiple components of the communications strategy such as researching, drafting and editing key messages, articles, memos, and announcements that drive our employee-based enterprise business goals

· Analyze complex subjects, issues, ideas and data, and present them in a simple to understand and compelling form

· Customize messages for health system employees, including current and prospective health care providers, team members and providers

· Work closely with different business areas on strategic initiatives that support our manager and employee-base

· Lead collaborations with other communicators and units across the health system and university

· Manage, develop and disseminate routine communications (e.g. newsletters, updates, blogs, fact sheets, briefing documents, and intranet content)

· Manage deadlines for multiple projects simultaneously and responsible for keeping the internal communications calendar up to date

· Tracks program activities and deliverables

· Perform other duties as assigned and /or participates in special projects in order to support the mission of VCUHS and the department

· Provide assistance to team members

· Accepts alternative assignments, as required, graciously

Minimum Hiring Standards:

· Minimum five years’ experience in which strategic and creative thinking skills, features writing and editing applied to multimedia communication tools were principle

· Minimum of 3 years of leadership/management/supervisory experience

· Experience with deadline journalism

· Excellent verbal and written communications skills

· Excellent interpersonal skills

· Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field from an accredited program

Preferred Hiring Standards:

· 5 years supervisory experience in academic medicine

· Experience in developing communications for diverse audiences

· Experience in project management, design and coordination

· 10 years direct related experience

· Master’s Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or related field
