The Assistant Dean, reporting to Ruth and Harold Newman Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences, oversees a school, division, academic program and/or function to enhance its profile, visibility, and effectiveness. He/she develops long- and short-range plans, and exercises management responsibility for academic program planning, faculty matters, and administration, including staffing, budgets, and facilities. He/she fosters a high- quality environment of academic teaching, research, and intellectual achievement, and creates and strengthens partnerships within and outside the College as a strong advocate.


The Assistant Dean for Operations is responsible for facilities, budgetary and personnel issues for the School of Arts and Sciences, Hunter College’s largest academic unit.


Facilities: The Assistant Dean coordinates all facilities issues that require School input, including the construction, renovation and maintenance of research laboratories and teaching facilities; maintains budgets for and plans appropriate use of research-derived overhead funds to be used for building projects, start up funding, facilities for newly hired faculty, and projects supported by the Dean's office; generates and organizes institutional data on space utilization as needed to support allocation of resources, and facilitates and coordinates the development single and multi-investigator projects and programs. In cooperation with Research Administration, the Assistant Dean works with all faculty members on research funding opportunities, reviewing applications and aiding in preparation of applications. The Assistant Dean serves as advisor to research core facilities and coordinates with Biosafety and Radiation safety officers.


Budget: The Assistant Dean formulates, prepares, and oversees financial planning and the budgeting process for the 26 departments and other programs in the School of Arts and Sciences. The position involves management of New York State funds as well as grant indirect cost resources and funds from external, non- tax-levy sources. This includes oversight of and report preparation, budget projections, allocations, and transactions. Financial reporting comprises preparation of financial statements, statistical reports, and funding determinations.


Personnel: The Assistant Dean oversees the processes of hiring new faculty, reappointments for faculty and staff, personnel assignments of staff, and the processes of tenure and promotion for the School of Arts & Sciences. The Assistant Dean also oversees, through an office manager, operations of the Dean’s Office and training of part-time staff. In addition, responsibilities include planning and budgeting for all personnel who serve as adjunct staff and temporary staff in the School’s sub-units. Staff support for this position includes a personnel manager and a budget assistant, plus any personnel assigned to report to them.





This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan.  All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

 Vaccine Requirement
