Expected hourly wage for this position is $19.50 up to $22.00 for experienced, qualified candidates. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications. Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the UW Ag Supervisor, this position performs and directs work in relation to the daily operation of a large dairy heifer and lactating cow research operation. This includes participation and direction of work in feeding, milking, cleaning, treating, observing, and handling dairy cattle, and the facilitation of research. This person participates in specific herd health duties, animal care procedures and maintenance of the herd reproduction program. This position assists in the day-to-day activities of animal research technicians. This position will function as lead to Animal Care Technician staff on the MARS research farm where there may be no on-site supervisor available and responsible for the full scope of the animal care and operations.

Responsibilities:

Serves as a resource and lead to other technicians and student employees; collects samples, administers medication and treatments, and performs feeding and maintenance responsibilities to ensure compliance with animal care regulations and in support of research and instruction.
  • 30% Leads the day-to day operational activities of an animal care work unit and facilitates staff training as needed
  • 15% Collects samples from animals and administers medications, injections, and treatments according to established protocols and procedures to be used for diagnostic and research
  • 10% Cleans and maintains organization of animal holding spaces
  • 5% Tracks inventory levels of animal supplies and places replenishment orders
  • 10% Maintains organization of and updates records related to work unit procedures
  • 15% Observes animal behavior, performs animal care, and reports concerns to the appropriate entities to contribute to the health and well-being of animals in support of research and instruction
  • 15% Maintains Reproductive status of the herd

Qualifications:

At least 5 or more years of agricultural work experience. Must have had some previous lead worker experience. Must possess high degree of technical skills to manage, care for and treat dairy cattle prepartum, newborn, lactating, and those injured, diseased, or ill. Must have skills in dairy cattle reproduction. Must possess computer skills and be proficient in written, electronic, and oral communication.

Work Schedule:

Work schedule is 11:00 am to 7:30 pm, 5-days a week. Schedule includes working some holidays and every other weekend work.
