Middlebury: College: Program in Black Studies

Location Middlebury, VT   Open Date Jul 07, 2022

Description

The Program in Black Studies at Middlebury College invites applications for two newly created endowed professorships in Black Studies: the Deborah G. Thomas professorship and a second endowed professorship in Black Studies. Appointments will be at the rank of associate or full professor with tenure based on experience. All candidates are expected to conduct cutting-edge research that also enriches course offerings in the growing Black Studies Program. Both professors will be expected to undertake a leadership role, and make contributions to the administration of the program. The hired candidates will have substantial input into the program’s curricular development and direction, and mentoring our recently-hired tenure-track faculty. Incoming faculty will also be expected to teach core courses in the program in addition to courses in their area of specialization  As a new and growing program, these positions are open in specialization and geographic areas of study in the humanities and social sciences. We particularly encourage applications from those working in subfields such as, but not limited to, Black feminisms, quantitative Black studies, Africana philosophies, African (diaspora) spiritualities and religions, or Black diaspora cultural studies.

The Program in Black Studies was started in 2019 and has hired tenure-track faculty recently. Black Studies at Middlebury has been uniquely underpinned by global approaches within the field, deep connections to the languages, and interdisciplinary work. The successful candidates will be expected to also contribute regularly to the college-wide curriculum, including the first-year seminar program and winter term curriculum. Candidates should provide evidence of excellent teaching and scholarly accomplishment commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor. The teaching load for both positions is 2-2 and 2-1-2 in alternating years.
