Applications are invited for appointment as Research Assistant Professor in Thermo-mechanics of Phase Transformations, Material Stability and High Throughput Ab initio Material Simulation in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Ref.: 515779), to commence as soon as possible and not later than October 31, 2022, on a three-year fixed-term basis with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers B.Eng., M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree programmes. The University of Hong Kong has a highly ranked engineering school and an active Mechanical Engineering Programme. The Department employs about 30 full-time faculty members and has well-equipped teaching and research facilities and support. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Engineering or a related engineering field with primary focus on theory and simulation of the Mechanics of Materials. The candidate must have expertise in the fields of continuum thermomechanics, material stability and/or bifurcation theory and ab initio simulation of material properties. Expertise in code development in Python, C++/FORTRAN and prior experience in large scale/high performance computing are required. The appointee will work in a close collaboration with other researchers in the group and is also expected to develop and contribute high throughput workflows for ab intio and molecular simulations for collaborative research. Previous teaching experience is a plus. Those with the capability to initiate collaborative projects with researchers in Hong Kong, strong motivation and willingness to engage in innovative teaching schemes like flipped classroom and e-Learning will be preferred. They should also have excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, and an excellent command of English.

The appointee is expected to work in Professor David Srolovitz’s research group; participate in a large-scale collaborative research with other groups in the Department; and develop a sub-group with synergy and coherence with the host research group. He/She will also teach or contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and Master’s degree courses in Mechanical Engineering; apply for research funding; and supervise research postgraduate students and capstone projects with engineering contents for final year undergraduates. Administrative work which promotes the educational mission of the University may also be required.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.
