Job Description

The Associate Vice President for Research Computing provides strategic leadership, vision, and execution for advanced research computing services to support the Virginia Tech research community and to advance the competitiveness and success of the university’s research enterprise. Recognizing the importance of computation, visualization, and data to its research mission, Virginia Tech has made significant and continuing investments in cyberinfrastructure and professional personnel in computational science, visualization, support, and operations.

The Associate Vice President provides vision, strategy, and leadership for advanced research computing at Virginia Tech; leads and coordinates the deployment and effective operation of high performance computing, large scale storage, high data rate networking, visualization, research software and applications, and support services that advance the university’s research competitiveness; broadens the impact of research computing at Virginia Tech by increasing the diversity of users; and actively engages with the research computing community both within and external to the university.

The Associate Vice President reports to the university’s Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer and leads the Advanced Research Computing (ARC) unit within the Division of IT. The Associate Vice President works closely with the Office of Research and Innovation and has a “dotted line” reporting relationship to the Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation.

Required Qualifications

• M.S. in engineering, science, or related field
• Ability to lead within a complex organization with a focus on service, support, effectiveness, and innovation
• Ability to collaborate and communicate with university leadership, research stakeholders, the university research community, and peers and other technology service providers
• Knowledge of high-performance computing and/or other research support services and operations in an academic or other research environment
• Ability to effectively organize and manage human, financial, and technology resources to achieve goals, including the ability to lead and supervise personnel and to manage budgets with multiple funding sources

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. in engineering, science, or related field
• Experience in securing external funding for research and/or research infrastructure
• Experience with managing and protecting restricted data
• Experience with supporting researchers using both on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure
• Experience using advanced research computing services as a researcher
