Job Description

Institute of Urban Education (IUE) - Grow Your Own Program (GYO) Field Instructor

The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Education is seeking a field instructor for innovative teacher pipeline and preparation programs. The individual will participate in a one-year, grant-funded initiative to prepare and support effective teachers for urban schools.

Major Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of this position include support for students in IUE Pipeline in accordance with the mission, goals, and policies of the IUE. Teaching and recruitment activities will vary from traditional means to new and innovative avenues for identifying prospective teachers for urban schools. Responsibilities include traveling between buildings on campus, to other campuses, high schools and community colleges in the Kansas City metropolitan area; frequently listening to and talking with students, faculty and other staff members either in person, on webcam, or by telephone. Duties include:
  • Serve as teacher of record for high school GYO pipeline program dual credit courses
  • Communicate with high school counselors, teachers and school district personnel
  • Participate in classroom visitation and other special events to explain program to potential student
  • Provide information to students and families regarding college admissions requirements and financial aid processes at school sites
  • Provide information regarding IUE admissions requirements and program benefits to prospective students and parents via phone, mail and personal visits; follows up with mail or phone call, as appropriate
  • Assist students in IUE application process, including the completion of application forms and procedures
  • Collect data and produces evaluation reports regarding IUE activities
  • Work with recruitment staff to coordinate assigned activities with those of other programs, departments, and outside agencies and organizations
  • Assist recruitment team members in implementation of special projects
  • Develop and maintain relationships with partner school districts (i.e. counselors, career development coordinators, faculty, administrators, etc.)
  • Assist with planning and development of teacher clubs and aspiring teacher classes in partner districts at the middle and high school levels
  • Assist with planning and implementation of GYO summer professional development for GYO Lead Teachers
  • Student support and retention activities for IUE students enrolled in the pipeline programs
  • Possibility of teaching undergraduate courses in education and college readiness
  • Mentorship of IUE beginning teachers
  • Team meetings and other unplanned activities
Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate should have a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in education or a related field. We seek an individual who finds education to be a critically important field and the role of teachers to be essential to our society.
  • 4 years teaching experience in urban public schools is required
  • Current or previous P-12 teacher certification is required
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to work well with individuals with diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated commitment to educational equity
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, anti-racism, and social justice
  • Demonstrated familiarity and knowledge of Kansas City and area schools
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 or more years teaching experience in Kansas City urban schools
  • 1 or more years of experience mentoring pre-service and/or beginning teachers
  • 1 or more years of experience with adult learning and/or demonstrated teacher leadership
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office Suite and database management
  • Bilingual preferred, but not required (English/Spanish)
Full Time/Part Time

Full-Time, benefit eligible, unranked/non-tenure track academic position. Initial contract is 9 months beginning Fall 2022.

Salary

Salary is commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.
