Director of Alumni Relations

Office of University Advancement and External Relations


The Director of Alumni Relations will engage Adelphi University's 100,000+ living alumni in meaningful ways including volunteerism and philanthropic support of Adelphi's mission. The Director is responsible for providing strategic direction for every aspect of the alumni relations program. The Director will implement a departmental strategy that not only aligns with Momentum 2, the University's strategic plan, but also meets the following goals:
  1. Engagement: Motivate alumni to invest in the success of Adelphi.
  2. Connection: Create new and leverage existing alumni connections to build loyalty and enhance the reputation of the program and the University.
  3. Leadership: Increase pride in the University by promoting alumni successes and increasing alumni volunteer leadership opportunities.
  4. Reputation: Serve as Adelphi's professional alumni relations expert to build the reputation of Adelphi's maturing alumni program.

The Director Alumni Relations will lead a team in developing and achieving engagement goals and metrics, creating alumni engagement events, supporting colleagues with alumni-based initiatives, managing the budget and developing a return on investment with programming as well in recruiting and engaging alumni.

REPORTS TO: Associate Vice President of University Advancement and External Relations


Engagement: Motivate alumni to care about the success of Adelphi.
  1. Foster life-long relationships with alumni from all backgrounds by initiating events and contacts, which provide educational opportunities, as well as professional and social interactions.
  2. Launch new and expand current programs to engage and cultivate the large population of previously unengaged or under-engaged alumni.
  3. Create audiences and present engagement opportunities through alumni events.
  4. Develop and implement high-quality regional chapter programs with volunteer leaders in cities where there is a concentration of alumni, donors, and admissions applicants.
  5. Create alumni affinity groups based on common interests and shared Adelphi experiences.
  6. Maintain consistent and positive communication with alumni via direct contact, newsletters, email blasts, alumni web pages, print publications and social media.
  7. Ensure accurate and complete alumni database records by capturing contact, biographical information of alumni via surveys, projects, events, correspondence, website, postal returns etc.
  8. Grow and promote an alumni benefits program.
  9. In partnership with the Division of Student Affairs, plan and execute Adelphi Spirit Weekend, an annual campus collaboration intended to appeal to alumni, students, families, faculty and staff, and the community.

Connection: Create new and leverage existing alumni connections to build loyalty to the alumni program and the University.
  1. Work with the Center for Career and Professional Development to create a robust slate of offerings for alumni seeking career enhancement services and to provide opportunities for alumni to assist other alumni and/or students on their career paths.
  2. Collaborate with internal partners to execute Signature Events and programs.
  3. Develop and manage alumni networks to support student recruitment and career placement of Adelphi alumni.
  4. Use virtual networks such as LinkedIn to develop a powerfully connected University and capture career information.

Leadership: Increase the pride in the University by promoting alumni success and increasing volunteer leadership opportunities for alumni.
  1. Grow a high-functioning Alumni Advisory Council whose membership reflects the University's alumni population.
  2. Collaborate with Adelphi's college, school, and program administrators to identify and engage alumni to serve on campus advisory and leadership boards.
  3. Create and expand programs that highlight and feature the personal and professional successes of the alumni population.
  4. Devise a comprehensive volunteer engagement and recognition program.

Reputation: Represent Adelphi with professional presence and awareness.
  1. Act as a University ambassador and represent Adelphi at public events.
  2. Elevate and increase the department's visibility and credibility on campus and in the community.
  3. Produce reports and analyses for the alumni relations program, operations and initiatives.

Overall Department and Staff Management:
  1. Work and collaborate with Alumni Relations and External Relations staff to create annual operating plans that engage alumni, current and potential donors, students, parents, and volunteers based on the goals laid out in Adelphi University's Strategic Plan: Momentum 2.
  2. Recruit, manage, and develop Alumni Relations staff, providing them with supervision, guidance, and mentoring in goal setting, performance management, skill building and professional growth.
  3. Hire, supervise and develop a team of student workers.
  4. Oversee and balance budget for department, including the tracking of all expenses and revenues to help determine return on investment.
  5. Develop metrics and key performance indicators for all alumni programming and communications.
  6. Perform other job related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):
  1. Experience in increasingly responsible positions in business, not-for-profit, and government agency or in higher education is required.
  2. Experience as a manager of direct staff reports.
  3. Experience in alumni relations or fund raising, special events, marketing or a volunteer organization is preferred.
  4. Experience and understanding of relationship engagement programs.
  5. Knowledge and skill in use of social media platforms.

Physical requirements:
  1. Ability to travel.
  2. Some evenings and weekends are required.

  1. Bachelor's degree is required.
  2. Master's degree is preferred.
  3. Three to five years of work experience in the field is required.
  4. Experience with NXT (preferred) or similar CRM is required.
  5. Experience with Moves Management ™ is preferred.
