Job Description:

Reports to: Chelsey Wright, Assistant Director of Competitive Sports

General position summary: Serve as a key member of the Club Sailing program, within the Department of Recreation.

This is a part-time, 8-month position from September 1-May 15 and is renewable. This position is not eligible for immigration assistance.

Assist with all aspects of the Club Sailing program, which include but are not limited to the following:

General Responsibilities
  • Attend and run all practices (based on scheduling needs)
    • Estimated timeframe based on official schedule:
      • Beginning of September - Beginning of November

      • Beginning of March – Beginning of May

  • Develop practice plans, run pre-practice chalk talk and post-practice debrief

  • Handle attendance at practice in collaboration with the club officers

  • Develop expectations for all athletes including workout plans outside of practice, mental/physical preparations, etc.

  • Decide what athlete will attend specific level regattas

  • Assign athletes to specific fleets and pairings

  • Attend/Coach A and B level regattas (can alternate based on need/competitiveness. Assess needs with club officers for an agreed upon schedule)

  • Debrief regattas on what went well and what needs improvement

  • Ensure that boats- sail and power - are regularly maintained, cleaned and kept in good working order during the competitive seasons. Coach will report maintenance needs promptly to officers and Assistant Director for any required purchases.

  • In cooperation with the Assistant Director and team leadership, schedule and direct off-season boat maintenance for Sailing Team’s fleet and coach boat(s).

  • Assist in recruiting students to Fairfield University and the Club Sailing Program

  • Understand and follow the United States Sailing Association (USSA), Inter-collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) and New England Sailing Association (NEISA) rules and regulations including knowledge of the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS) and the ICSA Procedural Rules

  • Understand and follow applicable University policies and procedures, including but not limited to the Employee Handbook, Student Handbook, and the Club Sports Handbook.

  • Performs such other duties, responsibilities, and activities as required by supervisor and as departmental/University needs indicate

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a current Level 1 US Sailing Coaching Certification

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Effective planning and organizational skills

  • Demonstrated experience in collegiate-style dingy racing, fleet racing and team racing

  • 1-2 years of prior coaching experience at the junior, high school, and/or college level

  • Basic maintenance knowledge of boats, docks, sails, ropes, equipment etc.

  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification (Preferred)
