TITLE: Extension Senior Assistant for Small Farms

DEPARTMENT: Cooperative Extension Program

REPORTS TO: Regional Extension Director

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full-time

EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Senior Extension Assistant for Small Farms works in collaboration with Extension agents to plan, implement, evaluate effective and comprehensive educational programs designed to solve social, economic, and environmental problems in agriculture and natural resources challenging small and limited resource farmers. The Senior Extension Assistant for Small Farms is responsible for non-formal educational programs in appropriate technology, alternative enterprises, farm planning and management, marketing, farm sustainability, and leveraging community collaboration. The Senior Extension Assistant for Small Farms will report to the Regional Extension Director.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (ex: duties that are essential to performing the job with or without accommodation)

• Work with Small Farms or Horticulture Agents to develop councils, advisory groups, and committees to facilitate community involvement in programming.

• Design, implement, and evaluate educational programs in the areas of agribusiness, alternative enterprises, farm management, local food production, and marketing.

• Develop field days, field trials, and demonstrations related to alternative enterprise production.

• Serve as a conduit to additional programing and information available at Kentucky State University such as apiculture, aquaponics, community gardening, organic production practices, small and tree fruit production, urban agriculture, vegetable production, livestock, grain and other related programing.

• Assist farmers with farm planning to improve income from agricultural production.

• Assist farmers with recordkeeping.

• Advise farmers on opportunities to apply for available grant programs such as the KSU Small Scale Farm Program grants, USDA grants, and other grant programs.

• Assist new agents and assistants with learning how to properly use KSU equipment (ex: plastic layers).

OTHER DUTIES: The position will conduct other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture or related field OR 15 plus years of experience in related field.

• Must have own transportation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

• Experience with planting and farm work.

• Knowledge of agriculture and local food production.

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.

• Skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages.

• Knowledge of data presentation and organization methods and techniques.

• Ability to maintain concise and accurate records.

• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

• Work could involve some exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

• Requires some standing or walking.

• Ability to lift 40 lbs.

• No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

• Extensive travel required.
