The Department of Indigenous Studies at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York invites applications across all academic ranks for a faculty position with research specializing in Indigenous relationships to the environment. This search is part of a multi-year faculty hiring initiative in support of the university’s new department of Indigenous Studies. This search is expected to yield one position at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank as part of a multi-year faculty hiring initiative in Indigenous Studies.

The College of Arts and Sciences is the recent recipient of a $3.2 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support the creation of a new Department of Indigenous Studies with an innovative and interdisciplinary structure. Academic and community engagement within this new department will recognize Indigenous nationhood and sovereignty as foundational to building ethical and productive scholarly, educational, and experiential learning relationships with Indigenous people, organizations, and communities. Deeply committed in supporting present and future generations of Indigenous students and scholars, UB’s Department of Indigenous Studies will promote research, educational, and outreach initiatives aligned with community priorities to ensure the continuity of Indigenous knowledge and languages, and the health and sustainability of Indigenous people, land, and water.

The mission of the Department of Indigenous Studies is to foster excellence in Indigenous-centered scholarship, research, and teaching, and to promote multidisciplinary research and teaching beneficial to Indigenous Nations, communities, and organizations in local, national, and global contexts.

We seek a candidate who studies the environment and anchors their research in Indigenous methodologies, themes, narratives, and concerns. Areas of expertise could include, but are not limited to Indigenous ecological knowledge, environmental justice, critical environmental theory, climate change, natural resource and resource management, water and land access and governance, place-based education, food systems, health and the environment, or sustainability practices, among others. Although we recognize the importance of studying Indigeneity in global contexts, scholars focusing on Native North America are strongly desired.

Minimum Qualifications

PhD in Native American Studies, Indigenous Studies, or closely related field in hand by time of appointment. Candidates should demonstrate clear evidence of scholarship and/or creative professional activity commensurate with academic rank.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated engagement with Indigenous communities and a verifiable relationship to an Indigenous community. Preference also will be given to those candidates with a record of socially-engaged research, experience teaching relevant courses at University, and experience mentoring Native and other underrepresented students.
