Job Summary:
Furman University seeks an inaugural professor and director of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) to build and develop outstanding curricular and co-curricular teaching, research, and community engagement on women, gender, and sexuality at Furman and in the surrounding Greenville, SC community.
Job Description:
We are seeking a visionary and engaging leader who holds a Ph.D. in a humanities, social science, or relevant academic field with a strong record of interdisciplinary and intersectional research/teaching on women's, gender, and sexuality studies; demonstration of effective teaching and mentoring; evidence of committed professional, campus, and community leadership; and expression of an innovative vision for the future of WGSS at Furman. Appointment will be at the rank of full professor (or advanced associate, with extensive relevant experience) within a department appropriate to the successful candidate's field of study. The professor and director will lead existing academic and co-curricular collaborations and facilitate new interdisciplinary initiatives and community partnerships. Candidates should exhibit advanced program-building skills and effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate with individuals and groups from various identities, cultures, and backgrounds. Scholars with strong leadership experience in policy, practical, and/or activist realms, in global and local contexts, are encouraged to apply.
Primary responsibilities:
- Create and direct activities and programming of the WGSS
program in coordination with other university partners, such as the
Center for Inclusive Communities, the Diversity-Equity-Inclusion
Committee, LGBTQ+ Affairs Subcommittee, the Furman Humanities
Center, and student organizations.
- Serve as an advocate for the WGSS program with senior
leadership and advance the University's commitment to anti-racism,
equity, inclusion, and accessibility through high-impact
initiatives and strategic collaborations; supervise and mentor
faculty and staff within the WGSS program; and facilitate
professional development and program
evaluation/assessment.
- Coordinate curricular matters such as course schedules, degree
audits, major/minor recruitment and advising; and maintain program
budgets.
- Design and teach courses in their area of expertise and lead
curricular development in ways that advance existing WGSS
offerings, including but not limited to: critical race feminisms,
transnational feminisms, queer and sexuality studies, trans
studies, immigration and human rights, gender-based violence, and
disability studies.
- Participate in academic conferences and symposiums to
critically engage with other scholars in women, gender, and
sexuality studies.
The successful WGSS director will also:
- Take initiatives to centralize diffused areas on campus that
promote WGSS.
- Apply for internal and external grants to support the WGSS
program.
- Support and mentor students, with respect for the integrity of
their individual paths.
- Bring together scholars and students to engage in and
disseminate publicly facing research that focuses on gender
justice.
