BASIC FUNCTION:
Thank you for your interest in applying for a tenure-track faculty position in the Ethnic Studies discipline at Moreno Valley College (MVC). The college is located in Southern California's Inland Empire region and offers instruction at two sites, a main campus located in the city of Moreno Valley as well as an off-campus site, the Ben Clark Training Center, located approximately 11 miles from the main campus. MVC is committed to educating and empowering our students, providing equitable access to education, and serving our communities. We are looking for a colleague who is strongly committed to the discipline of Ethnic studies, is committed to social and racial justice, and who emphasizes decolonial and anti-racist pedagogies. The ideal candidate will be equity minded and eager to work with a diverse student population and will be experienced in culturally-responsive pedagogical practices for engaging African-American, Latinx/Hispanic, Native-American, and Pacific Islander students, which are historically underserved. MVC has been designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community.

The successful candidate for this position will be well qualified to teach the introductory course in Ethnic Studies and are able to teach existing courses in one or more of the following:
African American/Black Studies, Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies, Chicanx and Latinx Studies, and Native American and Indigenous Studies. We are specifically seeking applicants who have the expertise and enthusiasm to lead and collaborate with other faculty in the development of the new Ethnic Studies discipline. Our ideal colleague will be a community-engaged scholar possessing a commitment to Ethnic Studies in both theory and praxis and will demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, and abilities of community college students.

EDUCATION:
Master's in the ethnic studies field
OR
A master's in American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino
Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies,
Latin American Studies, Cross Cultural Studies, Race
and Ethnic Relations, Asian-American Studies, or
African-American Studies OR the equivalent.

(All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions).

EXPERIENCE:
Recent experience working with racially, ethnically, and/or socioeconomically minoritized students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns have shaped these groups' experiences and representation within higher education, especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes. Demonstration of a willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to engage and support various groups of minoritized students more effectively.
Demonstrated teaching excellence in Ethnic Studies along with the expertise and ability to develop courses in African American/Black Studies, Asian American/Pacific Islander Studies, Chicanx/Latinx Studies, Native American and Indigenous Studies, Comparative Ethnic Studies, Critical Race Theory, Decolonization, Anti-racism, Intersectional Theory, Prison/Carceral Abolitionist Studies, and/or Borderland Studies and Migration.

Use of Ethnic Studies methods of inquiry such as intersectionality, decolonizing methodology, innovative transdisciplinary methodologies, anti-imperialist and abolitionist studies, social justice practices, and community-oriented activist action research.

Specialized expertise, education, or training in the field of Ethnic Studies, including relevant history and contexts, contributing theories, and pedagogical approaches.

Experience and/or interest in building Ethnic Studies curriculum and programming.

Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with colleagues across disciplines, to design, revise, and implement new and existing curriculum and to advance the development of Ethnic Studies at the college and in the district.

Commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population with a broad mix of Ethnic Studies course offerings.
Demonstrated sensitivity to and the ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse class positions, racial and ethnic backgrounds, cultures, religious affiliations, citizenship status, genders and sexual orientations, varied levels of academic preparation, learning styles, and/or disabilities.

COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY:
Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (E.C. 87360a).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will, among other things:

1. Demonstrate commitment to student equity and ability to facilitate, participate and lead in programmatic efforts, both within the department and campus-wide, to help students in low-performing groups succeed.

2. Teach courses in the disciplines for which the candidate meets Minimum Qualifications or the equivalent and as assigned based on enrollment management principles and within discipline and department guidelines for course rotation and course scheduling. Assignments are based upon the assumption of workload of forty hours weekly, including but not limited to conducting classes, class preparation, student evaluations, office hours and institutional service such as participation on college committees, involvement in student activities and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement.

3. Teach assigned courses in accordance with course outline of record.

4. Instruct and support students with diverse backgrounds utilizing culturally relevant pedagogy, careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methods including for online instruction, informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions, student learning outcomes, and support a philosophy of instruction focusing on critical thinking and analysis.

5. Maintain scheduled office and campus hours, and participate in department/division meetings and committees.

6. Perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with administrative responsibilities and College, division, and department policies.

7. Late afternoon and/or evening assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

8. Effective oral and written communication with students.

9. Commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.

10. Provide Ethnic Studies discipline expertise in the collaborative creation of Ethnic Studies curriculum and lead the development of the Ethnic Studies Program in collaboration with multidisciplinary faculty colleagues.

11. Complete 24 hours of "flex credit" annually through various professional development activities, workshops or seminars, as well as 8 hours of equity-related training.

12. Expected professional obligations include participation in discipline/department decision-making processes, Improvement of Instruction, curriculum and program development, student learning outcomes assessment, program review, maintenance of legal documents and adherence to FERPA requirements.

13. Expected to maintain standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
1. Ten-month, tenure-track position.
2. Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column C, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Faculty Salary Schedule.
3. Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and legal dependents.
4. A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee.
5. Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy.
6. Maintaining broad knowledge of the academic or occupational area and design andragogical related to learning outcomes is expected.
7. Responsible for all other conditions of employment required of full-time faculty members such as a willingness to be involved in District and College promotional activities, active participation in college committee work, student activities and other support services, and appropriate professional activities.
