Johns Hopkins University seeks a postdoctoral fellow for a joint appointment in the Center for Talented Youth (CTY) and the School of Education (SOE) beginning as early as summer 2022. The fellowship will be under the direction of Amy Lynne Shelton, PhD, a professor and associate dean at SOE and senior director of research at CTY. Scholars who have completed a Ph.D. in educational psychology, psychometrics, cognitive science, or a related field are invited to apply to work on cutting edge research and test development to advance our understanding of how to identify and serve all students with high academic potential and ability.

CTY is dedicated to identifying and developing the talents of academically advanced pre-college students around the world. CTY serves advanced learners and their families through research, advocacy, and counseling, as well as gifted and talented summer, online, international, and family programs. Annually, CTY enrolls more than 20,000 students from across the United States and more than 60 countries.

The CTY Research Lab supports the mission of the institution through research and evaluation efforts that leverage the vast CTY database and explore innovative ideas in education for high academic potential. The work is organized around the major themes of (1) identification and characterization of academic potential (cognitive skills, creativity, dynamic assessment), (2) optimizing face-to-face, distance and online education, and (3) supporting and promoting academic education. talent for all advanced learners. (Cognitive skills, creativity, dynamic assessment), (2) optimizing in-person, remote, and online education, and (3) supporting and fostering academic ability for all advanced learners. Projects are on- going, and the specific focus for the Fellow depends on current priorities and alignment of research interests and skills. Fellows are expected to engage in research full-time and are expected to fulfill the following responsibilities in a collaborative context:

  1. Coordinating the project team under the supervision of the PI (Dr. Shelton)
  2. Collaborating on comprehensive literature review, as needed
  3. Contributing to instrument development processes
  4. Overseeing data collection and processing
  5. Analyzing data
  6. Collaborating with the PI and other investigators on interim reports and papers
  7. Propose, lead, and/or participate in professional presentations and workshops at state, regional, and national conferences
  8. Contributing to grant writing and supporting grant-funded research projects
  9. Lead research aligned with both the postdoctoral associate and the larger team’s goals
  10. Designing educational interventions


The fellowship provides a competitive stipend, a conference and travel stipend, and other benefits for one-year. The length of the fellowship may be extended through appropriate external funding at the individual or project level as available. The selected candidate will be appointed as a postdoctoral fellow through the School of Education where training will include access to the rich academic environment (seminars, colloquia, teaching opportunities, etc.) and conduct research as part of the collaborative CTY-Engineering research team.

Education
  • Must have a PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant field of study
  • PhD must be completed prior to acceptance. Students in the process of completion must provide assurance that their degree will be complete prior to start.
Required skills
  • Experience and scholarship in educational research or a related field using quantitative methods.
  • Demonstrated background in research design and statistics
  • Facility with statistical software and willingness to learn additional platforms
  • Comfort with working in online platforms for research and collaboration
Preferred skills
  • Knowledge of the field of Gifted and Advanced Learning
  • Experience working with K-12 students/schools
  • Light programming/coding in one or more languages (R, Access, Java, SQL, etc.)

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
