Under the direction of the Associate Dean for Research, the Director of the Falk College Research Center has responsibility over the daily activities and operations of the Research Center. The Director advances the research mission of Falk College and Syracuse University by promoting research excellence, creating research partnerships in the public and private sectors, supporting the development of interdisciplinary research teams, and encouraging cross-campus collaborations with faculty and research staff to encourage growth and change. The Director advises the Associate Dean for Research and the Dean of Falk College in strategic planning for research development, facilitates the development and submission of internal and external sponsored proposals, assists with internal and external sponsored funding reporting, identifies pertinent funding opportunities matched to faculty research trajectories, fosters new research and administrative initiatives by engaging faculty in workgroups and teams, and fosters an inclusive and collaborative research culture. Qualifications
Master’s Degree required. A minimum of 5 years of experience in research or sponsored program administration in an academic or similar environment; broad knowledge of external research and sponsored programs funding; grant development and budgeting; expertise in analyzing and interpreting federal and non-federal funding regulations. Expertise in internal and external systems used in research development; experience managing sponsored funding awards, personnel, and budgets; experience leading diverse teams on deadline-driven projects; strong organizational skills; experience working with educational institutions, government agencies, health-related agencies, community organizations, and human services agencies; knowledge of the university policies and procedures; knowledge of federal and state grant policies and procedures; excellent written and verbal communication skills including high-level persuasion and negotiation skills; a track-record of interfacing effectively with multiple faculty and staff; the ability to work under the pressure of multiple internal and external deadlines; ability to work independently and collaboratively with a variety of individuals. Responsibilities
- Research development for interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary research teams between faculty at Falk College and SU, other institutions, and community partners to enhance institutional research competitiveness in extramural funding. Facilitate and manage single- and multi-investigator projects and single- and multi-institution projects. Includes supporting faculty research agendas, operating as a facilitator by organizing planning meetings, offering proposal guidance, developing proposal requirement outlines and timelines, document development (e.g., letters of support, biosketches, current and pending support), budget development, supplementary grant writing, completing proposal review and submission. Simultaneous management of proposals, projects, deadlines, and initiatives.
- Support the research infrastructure on campus as a leader in the University community, by participating in SU RD (Syracuse University Research Development), Upstate Regional Research Development, and NORDP (National Organization of Research Development Professionals) to advance research and develop a comprehensive sponsored research network of resources. Liaison with Dean, Chairs, faculty and staff; the Office of Research, including the Office of Sponsored Programs and Office of Research Integrity and Protections; Office of Sponsored Accounting; Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations; and academic units across the campus.
- Develop tools and strategies to effectively and efficiently locate funding opportunities for faculty, staff and students in Falk College that match the scope of their research. Create systems through engagement of key individuals to identify and support unmet needs (e.g., labs, equipment, training, other resources) in research development. Provide one-on-one training (including resources, templates, and boilerplate documents) to support the advancement of Falk College’s collective research agenda.
- Oversee the day-to-day activities of the Research Center including post -award support and problem-solving issues in all stages of the grant development process, develop communication strategies to raise the visibility of Falk research for both faculty and students, train and supervise the Research Center student intern, generate reporting as needed for administration, boards, alumni and donors, and supervise research center staff.
