Summary
The Sr. Lab Technician performs a variety of cellular and molecular biology experiments and analyses on samples and cells isolated from animal studies; assists with general laboratory assays including histology, western blots, cell culture, ELISA, RNA isolation, and rtPCR; maintains the lab, including maintenance of equipment and ordering supplies; perform routine and complex animal experiments including breeding, exposures and surgery; ensures compliance with policies and maintain lab documentation for safety reviews and audits; organizes and analyze results of experiments and present data to others as required; teach and train new lab members in methods and techniques used by the lab; and perform an array of other laboratory functions.

Training
- Plans and performs a variety of cellular and molecular biology experiments and analyses on samples and cells isolated from animal studies. Assist with general laboratory assays including histology, western blots, cell culture, ELISA, RNA isolation, and rtPCR. Perform cell culture and manipulation of multiple types of human cell lines
- Operates scientific equipment including rodent inhalation machines, standard and confocal microscopes with associated camera and software, tissue culture hood, sonicator, microplate reader, RNA/DNA isolation kits, gel electrophoresis apparatus, incubators, balances, and pH meters real time PCR machine, SDS-PAGE electrophoresis. Operates PC and Mac computers for data analysis.
- Responsible for overseeing animals (mice) used in the
laboratory either directly or by supervising other technical staff
and students
- Performs lab housekeeping and managerial duties including
ordering supplies, keeping inventory, organization, record keeping,
preparing and re-stocking reagents, equipment maintenance.
Communicate established guidelines to others and ensures compliance
with all University guidelines and policies. Be the contact for
safety and facilities for the lab
- Teaches and trains incoming lab members in the methods and
techniques used in the laboratory. Assists faculty, fellows,
students, and trainees. Maintains standard protocols,
troubleshooting and modifying as needed. Participates in program
seminars and enrichment activities
- The candidate should have a working knowledge of major current molecular biology techniques including tissue culture (cell lines and primary cells), Western blot, RNA isolation, PCR and RT-PCR, gene transfer, ELISA immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry, microscopy and photomicroscopy. May perform cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, and adenovirus and lentiviral vector systems as authorized.
- Candidate must be competent in a broad range of molecular biology and animal techniques and possess a composite set of skills including strong communication skills, strong organization skills, demonstrated interpersonal management skills and strong writing skills.
- Must be able to work independently in designing and implementing experiments and must be able to communicate established guidelines to others.
- Expertise with animal experiments, breeding, colony maintenance, microscopy and molecular biology techniques.
- Candidate must have excellent command of oral and written English language and work effectively in a collaborative and diverse work environment. Candidate must be able to work with rodents and must complete human subjects research training.
- Extensive course work in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Molecular Biology and 3 to 5 years of experience conducting cellular and molecular biology experiments or related laboratory experience involving direct assistance to researchers.
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Molecular Biology; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with 1-3 years relevant
experience preferred.
Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required. - Proficiency with Photoshop and statistical software preferred.
- Occasional weekend and evening hours may be necessary.
- Experience with cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, and adenovirus and lentiviral vector sys t ems is desirable.
Light lifting (less than 20 lb), moderate lifting (20-50 lb), fast pace, multiple stimulation, intense customer interaction, frequent change, memory, reasoning, hearing, reading, analyzing, logic, standing, bending, and verbal and written communication.
