As part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University seeks an Assistant Director of External Affairs to promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity. 


The Assistant Director of External Affairs will report directly to the Director of the Center for Vibrant Schools and collaborate closely with the Assistant Directors of the Center for Vibrant Schools and the Director of City Connects Midwest. Assistant Director of External Affairs will direct external outreach, engagement, relationship building efforts for the Center for Vibrant Schools at Marian University.

Job Functions:

The Assistant Director of External Affairs is a managerial position responsible for establishing community partnerships and increasing brand awareness of the Center of Vibrant Schools and its programs. This person provides external relationship to area schools, nonprofits, and other community agencies or community groups that would benefit from partnership with the Center for Vibrant Schools. The Assistant Director of External Affairs collaborates with Marian Marketing and Communications other Marian department/programs, and community organizations to facilitate external outreach efforts for existing partners and to assist with organization wide marketing efforts to increase the visibility in the communities the Center serves, and across the Midwest Region.

Job Responsibilities:

Time and Organization Management:

  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values, honoring the legacy of the founding congregation, promoting unity in diversity, and integrating the Catholic Franciscan intellectual traditions in courses, programs, and services.
  • Create and execute external strategic plan that effectively engages and recruits’ schools and partners that further secures commitments in implement/expand the City Connects practice.
  • School strategist who will extend expert knowledge of education and student support to heighten effectiveness of external engagement, marketing and recruitment efforts and foster understanding.
  • Lead engagement plan for new and continued schools, partners, coordinators, and program managers to cultivate a community of City Connects support, inside and outside the TA Center.
  • Serve as an experienced, City Connects Program manager for TA Center providing support to novice program managers and maintaining a full case load of Schools.
  • Analyze data to drive design for engagement and expansion of the practice.
  • Work with the Center’s Director, of City Connects Midwest to proactively plan/execute and communication strategy aligned with the goals of the Center for Vibrant Schools.
  • Assist with completion of all communications and other marketing related tasks as assigned.
  • Manage multiple marketing projects and work with multiple community groups and schools while maintaining excellent attention to detail with follow through.

External Efforts:

  • Establish working relationships with community partners, principals, school district leaders, school staff/faculty, colleagues, media and donors alike.
  • Identify, establish and maintain ongoing relationships with individuals, groups and organizations in the community to increase brand awareness of the Center of Vibrant Schools, and establish referral &partnership opportunities for Center programs.
  • Attend recruitment and cultivation meeting with area schools, nonprofits and community organizations in partnership with the Director.

Event Coordination:

  • Work with the Center’s Director, Assistant Directors, Director of City Connects Midwest and Marian University’s Marketing Department to proactively plan a yearly community outreach event calendar for the Midwest Region.
  • Identify, secure and participate in community events (i.e., community fairs, school meetings, networking events, etc.0 to promote the services of the Center for Vibrant Schools
  • Identifies and tracks request for representation at community events and coordinates pre-and post-event details, staffing marketing materials and promotions activities.
  • Establishes partnerships an attends community meeting as a representative of the Center for Vibrant Schools initiatives
  • Inventories and orders outreach supply and assist in developing strategic outreach plans.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master Degree in education, social work, school counseling, or other human services related field.
  • 3-5 years’ experience working with a university school, nonprofit social service or community development organization.
  • Experience marketing for nonprofit, K-12 school university, or community agency
  • Proficiency in Project Management
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Relationship building skills, well-organized, forward-thinking and with a positive attitude.
