Job Summary:

The Interior Architecture program within the Design Studies Department is an internationally recognized program known for its innovative interdisciplinary research and broad-based professional education. Its mission is to combine research and design practice to improve people's lives through human-centered design within the built environment.

Within this context, this position is responsible for delivering rigorous lecture, studio, and seminar instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor will provide leadership in recruiting, teaching, and mentoring of undergraduate students, and to advise students on academic and career choices. The Interior Architecture (IA) program utilizes a co-teaching model for studio instruction, where practice- and research-focused faculty equally contribute to student's learning experiences.

The position is responsible for developing a nationally competitive teaching program relevant to the multidisciplinary field of Environmental Design Research, with an emphasis on the dynamic relationship between people and their physical, social, and cultural environment in order to address various contemporary issues such as health and wellbeing, sustainability, and social justice.

The Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor will provide experience and expertise in commercial, hospitality, workplace, and/or healthcare building design with strong focus on construction, construction detailing, environmental control system (lighting, acoustics, and thermal comfort) and technical abilities to use design software to develop 3D models/rendering.

This position is expected to participate in undergraduate program development, innovation, and leadership as well as in department service, such as curriculum development, award jurying, advising, and faculty meeting attendance. In addition, service to the college, university and the profession is expected.

We are seeking candidates who have advanced degrees (M.Arch, MFA, Doctorate, or Ph.D.) in Interior Design, Architecture, and other allied design fields.

Qualifications:

The rank (assistant, associate, or full) is commensurate with experience levels in industry and teaching experience in interior design or related design industries. We are particularly interested in candidates with extensive knowledge and experiences in commercial, hospitality, workplace, and/or healthcare building design with strong focus on construction, construction detailing, environmental control system (lighting, acoustics, and thermal comfort) and technical abilities to use design software to develop 3D models/rendering.

The ideal candidate will have:
- 3 years of professional practice in the field of commercial, workplace, hospitality, and healthcare interior/architectural design.
- Experience and/or interest in undergraduate program development, innovation, and leadership.
- Evidence of excellence in teaching and student mentoring over an extended period of time.
- The ability to teach Interior Architecture studio, seminar, and lecture courses at undergraduate and graduate levels including, but not limited to, current knowledge on design communication technology and willingness to stay up to date.
- Demonstrated experience at creating process-driven, research-based, human-centered design solutions for a range of design challenges at a level appropriate for undergrad studio teaching.
- The ability to work effectively within a diverse community, and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.
- Ability to work effectively and compassionately with a diverse student population to support their learning and personal/professional development.

Preferred Qualifications:
- NCIDQ certified or eligible
- 3 years of experience in teaching in higher education.

DESIGN STUDIES DEPARTMENT: The Design Studies Department currently houses two undergraduate programs (the Interior Architecture & the Textile and Fashion Design). The third major is currently underway, which focuses on how design offers solutions for society's complex social, economic, political, and cultural challenges. It also houses a graduate program that offers MFA and Ph.D. degrees in the broader field of design and provides instructional support for the Master of Design and Innovation program on campus.

The Interior Architecture program is an internationally recognized program known for its innovative interdisciplinary research and broad-based professional education. Its mission is to combine research and design practice to improve people's lives through human-centered design within the built environment. The program prepares students to become independent thinkers by promoting critical reflection on alternative ways of living, to become effective problem-solvers in the field of Interior Architecture, to develop interdisciplinary aptitude for solving pressing issues in contemporary design practices, and to become design leaders as stewards and visionaries of the public realm by fostering socially responsible and collaborative design thinking. The program is fully accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), with the next accreditation visit scheduled for 2023. The Design Studies Department provides excellent technology and design resources; these include the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery-Virtual Environment Group (Virtual Environments) as well as campus maker spaces, which provide opportunities to collaborate on teaching and research.

THE CENTER FOR DESIGN AND MATERIAL CULTURE: The Center for Design and Material Culture is the primary destination for the multi-disciplinary study of material culture and design at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with particular focus on the study of design, material culture, and textile. This vision is supported by the rich resources of the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection, two galleries, the Ruth Davis Gallery and the Lynn Mecklenburg Textile Gallery, and the SoHE Innovation Studio.
