The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking an exceptional cancer prevention and control expert to join Livestrong Cancer Institutes' as the research program director of operations for the Program on Cancer Prevention and Control.

The Livestrong Cancer Institutes, in conjunction with the Livestrong Foundation, was launched in partnership with Dell Medical School in 2014. Under the leadership of Inaugural Director S. Gail Eckhardt, MD, Livestrong Cancer Institutes (LCI) builds on the knowledge gained from Livestrong's unique relationship with cancer patients and survivors derived from 10 years of survey data, community outreach, and direct service provision to those affected by cancer to create a scalable, replicable set of best practices across the continuum of cancer care including prevention; screening and early detection; treatment; survivorship; and palliative and end of life care.

The Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) program is one of the cornerstones of the LCI. CPC currently includes 8 investigators who have garnered over $8 million in grant funding in the past 5 years. The program is co-led by Dr. Michael Pignone, Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine and Dr. Navkiran Shokar, Chair of the Department of Population Health. Dr. Pignone is a national expert in cancer prevention and control, who has a long-standing track record of successful grant-funded research and mentorship of junior and mid-career investigators. Dr. Pignone's specific areas of interest include colorectal cancer screening implementation, shared decision making for several cancer prevention and treatment services, and the use of modeling to guide organization of clinical services to provide high value, patient-centered care. Dr. Shokar is a distinguished cancer and prevention control researcher who focuses on addressing disparities in screening detectable cancers in vulnerable groups, especially Hispanic populations.


Development of a strong cancer prevention and control program is a major focus for the University of Texas, the School of Medicine, and the Livestrong Cancer Institutes. The operational director will be focused on developing all aspects of the cancer prevention and control program, including facilitating innovative and ground-breaking research; creating a strong research training environment that will faculty to progress from early career development through to independent funding; and ensuring that effective cancer prevention and control strategies are implemented widely to reduce the burden of cancer in our communities and eliminate disparities in cancer outcomes.


Provide administrative leadership for the cancer prevention and control program, including supervision of program staff, budgeting, financial accounting and reporting, faculty and staff recruitment, and professional development

Participate in cancer prevention and control-related health services and health promotion research, including the development of grant proposals, implementation of cancer prevention and control research, and dissemination of new insights and innovations

Build collaborations with other researchers or researchers in training, including students, residents, and fellows, at the University of Texas and beyond

Facilitate publication and dissemination of program scholarship, including supporting publication in high-impact journals and presentation of work at national and international meetings

Collaborate with colleagues at UT Health Austin and other partner institutions to implement research in practice


  • PhD degree with health services research or other related public health field with at least 5 years of research experience.
  • PhD candidates with two years post-doctoral experience are exempt from the 5 years of research experience.
  • Eligible for faculty appointment at The University of Texas Dell Medical School

Strongly Preferable
  • Experience in cancer prevention and control-related health services research.
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity, including prior national research presentations and peer-reviewed publications in health services research.
  • Experience in health disparities research
