Digital Communications Specialist

Job Description Summary:
The digital communications specialist is responsible for managing the presence of the University of La Verne on social media to increase brand awareness and to inform and engage key audiences, such as prospective students, current students, and community partners. The position also contributes to engaging stakeholders by developing content for the university's website, assisting with the distribution of email newsletters, and supporting other communications initiatives. Reporting to the director of media and public relations in the Office of Strategic Communications (OSC), the individual in this position will develop a strong analytics framework to monitor the effectiveness of the university's social media outreach and maintain the university's digital photo library.

Specific Duties:
  • Maintain a social media content calendar. Create original social media posts and campaigns to promote university news, events, and brand messages.
  • Engage audiences by responding to inquiries, answering questions, and tagging relevant accounts. When needed, route questions to appropriate members of the university community for follow up. Coordinate with public relations staff on crisis communications.
  • Research and recommend emerging technologies and trends to best position the university with its online audience. Monitor social media health by tracking follower and engagement growth. Create analytics reports and use analytics to inform strategy and decision making.
  • Maintain the university’s digital photo archives.
  • Coordinate with others in the department to support recruitment marketing and brand awareness campaigns. Assist with the creation of marketing materials, email newsletter, and other digital campaign assets as needed.
  • Assist with creating and optimizing website content.
  • Be a culturally competent employee who attends/completes mandatory diversity and inclusivity trainings as provided by the university.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, technology, or related fields.
  • One year of experience in a digital marketing, digital content creation, social media management, or related field.
  • Professional understanding of platforms including, but not limited to, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and other emerging channels.
  • Experience using a social media planning or listening platform.
  • Ability to effectively write and communicate visually — through images or graphics —across various communications channels.
  • Attention to detail and understanding of how information is interconnected.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and respond appropriately to time-sensitive issues.



Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Knowledge of web content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress and digital asset management systems such as Canto or Image Relay.
  • Knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) best practices.
  • Experience with Canva and LucidPress.
