Job Description

Housed in the Department of Agricultural, Leadership, and Community Education, the Food Systems Network and Outreach Specialist will provide research, network development, and outreach support for the combined efforts of the Virginia Beginning Farmer and Rancher Coalition and the Center for Food Systems and Community Transformation. Their primary responsibility will be assisting the Director of these programs in all educational, research, managerial, and program evaluation responsibilities related to these food and farming system initiatives. The specialist will specifically be responsible for 1) developing, publishing, managing, and updating educational and outreach resources, 2) coordinating and conducting participatory programming and community-based research, 3) planning and implementing network activity and partnership programs, and 4) and leading the evaluation and reporting of training events and community-based research activity. The Specialist will further support the Virginia Beginning Farmer and Rancher Coalition and the Center for Food Systems and Community Transformation with overall program evaluation, publishing, and project reporting. The Specialist will also be responsible for the development of training materials, peer-reviewed publications, and grant proposals.

Required Qualifications

•MS degree in an agricultural, food system, or environmental science related field
•Experience in community-based research with farm and food system stakeholders
•Experience in program evaluation and community education programming with food and farming system contexts
•Familiar with new farmer, forest farmer, and regenerative agricultural issues and stakeholders needs.
•Excellent critical thinking, writing, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

•PhD degree in in an agricultural, food systems, or environmental science related field.
•Program evaluation design and implementation experience from a participatory and culturally responsive perspective.
•Network development experience with local and regional food system stakeholders
•Experience working with historically underserved food and farming system communities from an equity lens.
•Grant project management and reporting experience
