Job Description

The Director of Academic Advising in the undergraduate public health program will be responsible for supporting all aspects of academic advising for Bachelor of Science in Public Health students. The Director will coordinate academic advising in the undergraduate public health program, keep up to date with university policies regarding academics, individually advise undergraduate majors and minors, and manage projects and programs that support undergraduate public health students.

Essential Responsibilities of the Director:

Develop and manage projects and programs that support advising services in the undergraduate public health program

• Effectively develop and manage a high performing, collaborative advising team with clear roles and responsibilities Coordinate student contacts, advising and registration
• Advising assessment and analysis
• Advising communications
• Advising caseload assignments
• Coordinate commencement activities
• Serve as BDMS (document management) and EARS (academic referrals) administrator for the Department/College
• Meet with students on probation and suspension
• Serve as a liaison with Registrar’s Office related to the university transfer guide, transfer equivalence database, degree analysis, and graduation issues
• Work with Registrar’s Office to clear students for graduation

Provide academic advising services to approximately 200 undergraduate public health students majors and minors

• Deliver accurate academic information and advice about majors, minors, course options, study abroad, transfer credit, and extracurricular activities
• Initiate academic intervention for students in academic difficulty
• Assist students in developing a comprehensive educational plan
• Make appropriate referrals to campus support partners
• Serve on departmental and college committees as necessary

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree with significant experience in education, student development, counseling, or similarly related field: demonstrated advising and counseling experiences related to undergraduate college students; excellent communication and interpersonal skills, excellent organizational skills, ability to work with diverse populations of students. A strong desire to help students and ensure all are successful. Ability to advise and help students identify their best career options. Ability to be a collegial departmental, college and university citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated understanding of the programs at Virginia Tech relevant to curricular issues and success of students. A history of being collaborative with constituent groups. Academic advising experience and/or other relevant experience in areas such as career planning, educational planning, or counseling. Familiarity with student information systems. Member of NACADA or like professional organization.
