Assistant Professor - Engineering (tenure track)

The newly formed Engineering program at Marymount University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level beginning in January 2023. Successful candidates will have demonstrated teaching experience in mechanical engineering and research interests conducive to involving undergraduate students. Experience in robotics/mechatronics and/or machine-learning/AI and interest in developing a graduate program (PhD, MS, MEng) are desirable. Applicants should have a PhD in mechanical engineering or a related field or assurance they will complete the degree by January 2023. About the Engineering Program at Marymount

Marymount’s Engineering program (comprising degrees in biomedical and mechanical engineering) is part of the Marymount University School of Science, Mathematics, and Engineering housed in the College of Sciences and Humanities. Faculty are expected to teach high-quality student-centric undergraduate courses.

The University currently offers a Mechanical Engineering dual-degree option in collaboration with the University of North Dakota and has Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering degrees starting in the Fall 2022 semester. Come join us on the ground floor of this new engineering program comprising Bachelor of Science degrees in Biomedical and Mechanical engineering! We are seeking a tenure-track faculty member to work on the development and implementation of these programs and will be exploring the development of a graduate program in Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering as well.

Applicants for this position should have demonstrated experience with digital fabrication technologies and machine-shop experience with interest in growing and building significant hands-on opportunities for students to complete practical engineering projects. The biomedical engineering program has strengths in biomechanics, cellular and tissue engineering, development of open-source assistive devices, and the use of VR and machine learning/AI in rehabilitation and optimal aging programs. We are seeking a mechanical engineer with experience in machine-learning/artificial intelligence and/or robotics/mechatronics, though applicants in all areas of Mechanical Engineering will be considered. Both degrees will support international efforts of the eNABLE Chapter of Marymount University, the Go Baby Go garage, efforts in Nicaragua partner clinics and an anticipated chapter of Engineering World Health (EWH). Successful candidates will also interact with the new research Center for Optimal Aging focused on research, advocacy, and practical solutions in pursuit of improving participation in society for aging populations.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support and integrate the mission and core values of Marymount University and Academic Affairs, including our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Teach a 3/3 course load each year.
  • Actively involve undergraduate students in research projects
  • Maintain a record of quality, peer reviewed scholarship.
  • Pursue external grant opportunities to support development and growth of engineering at Marymount
  • Advise, develop, implement, and assess curricula for biomedical and mechanical engineering degrees for ABET accreditation cycles
  • Maintain office hours at times that provide appropriate access to students.

Other Duties

  • Assume professional responsibilities as requested by the Dean of the College and School Director
  • Engage in on-going professional development which will include scholarship activities such as research, presentations, participation in professional organizations, etc.
  • Establish connections with local employers to assist students in obtaining internship and employment opportunities
  • Serve as a mentor/advisor for students studying biomedical/mechanical engineering at the undergraduate level including ensuring workplace and/or graduate study readiness;
  • Be engaged in a variety of admissions and recruitment events for the engineering program
  • Contribute to the university, College of Sciences and Humanities, and School of Science, Mathematics, and Engineering functions and services including assessments, committees, and continuous improvement activities

Education

  • PhD (ABD with completion by 01/15/2023) in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
