Position Overview

The Director of Student Affairs Assessment and Strategic Initiatives is an unclassified position in the Office of the Vice Provost for Student Affairs reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost for Student Affairs. The Director provides leadership for the implementation of a comprehensive assessment plan across all Student Affairs departments. The Director is responsible for advancing a culture of assessment and evidence with the goal of enhancing programmatic/operational outcomes, student learning, and strategic planning processes. The Director manages the Student Affairs strategic plan and ensures its alignment with Jayhawks Rising, the University strategic plan. As a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team, this position requires a willingness to work with other campus partners and an ability to effectively interact with students, parents, and other community constituents.

Student Affairs is the University's student services organization and provides services and programs that assist students in achieving their academic and personal goals. Student Affairs coordinates the development of these services and programs and serves as an advocate for student needs across the University community.

Job Description

60% Leadership/Management

  • Provides leadership for the standard policies, procedures, and methods for assessment across Student Affairs departments.
  • Supervises Assessment and Strategic Initiatives staff, including the Student Affairs Communications Specialist.
  • Supports Student Affairs departments in prioritizing integrity and equity in all assessment efforts via the annual reporting process, goal/outcome articulation and alignment, and assessment capacity-building.
  • Works with the Student Affairs Leadership Team to advance Student Affairs’ collective focus on student learning, student experience assessment, and data-informed decision making by ensuring that assessment and reporting align with unit and institutional missions, goals, and outcomes.
  • Collaborates with Analytics, Institutional Research, & Effectiveness (AIRE), Academic Success, and other agencies on shared projects and initiatives.


35% Communication & Strategic Initiatives

  • Oversees the development and management of the Student Affairs strategic plan and ensures alignment with the University strategic plan.
  • Communicates progress via reports and presentations to internal and external audiences.
  • Updates the content of the Student Affairs Assessment website.
  • Represents Student Affairs and the University at national conferences and workshops as appropriate.
  • Assists in the development of grant and research proposals.
  • Publishes research findings in appropriate venues.

5% Other Related

  • Serves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team and participates on relevant campus committees.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as designated by the Assistant Vice Provost and Vice Provost for Student Affairs.

Required Qualifications

  1. Master's degree
  2. Three year's experience (full time or graduate student) designing social science research (research design & construction, analysis plan, interpret data and draw conclusions).
  3. Supervisory experience as outlined in application materials.
  4. Experience with advanced analytic tools used in quasi-experimental research, including both qualitative and quantitate methods.
  5. Experience with large longitudinal data sets.
  6. Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
  7. Experience working with persons from diverse backgrounds while supporting a welcoming and inclusive environment in a university setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Earned doctorate.
  2. Three years' experience in learning, behavioral, health, and academic outcomes assessment.
  3. Ability to collaborate with practitioners in Student Affairs to develop assessment efforts.
  4. Strong collaborative style for establishing and maintaining collegial working relationships with a diverse population of faculty/staff/students in a university setting.
  5. Awareness of current trends, literature, and directions in assessment.
  6. Publications record in peer-review journals.
  7. Experience with direct assessment efforts.
  8. Knowledge of the IRB process.
  9. Ability to work independently.
  10. Commitment to professional development as evidenced by involvement in professional associations.
  11. Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills as evidence during the interview process.
