Job Summary

The Department of Communication and Creative Arts at Purdue University Northwest (PNW) invites applications for an exceptional academic leader to serve as Department Chairperson, a tenure-track position with faculty rank of Full Professor, to begin Fall 2023. The chairperson serves as the chief administrative and academic officer of the department having authority and responsibility for the delivery of academic programs in accordance with departmental, college, and university strategic plans; the evaluation of department personnel, to include faculty and staff; and budgeting and resource management.

Qualifications/Requirements

CHESS invites applicants with a doctorate in Communication Arts, Digital Media and Communications, Communication Studies, Strategic Communication, or related field to apply for the Chairperson of the Department of Communication and Creative Arts (CCA). The CCA Chairperson serves as the administrative and academic leader of the department; has authority and responsibility for the delivery of academic programs in accordance with departmental, college, and university strategic plans; the evaluation of department personnel, to include faculty and staff; and budgeting and resource management.

Position Responsibilities
  • Work with faculty, students, and staff to establish and maintain a long term vision for the department that is consistent with departmental, college, and university missions; coordinate departmental participation in college and university activities; ensure compliance with college, university, system and state rules and regulations.
  • Coordinate the development of classes from conceptualization to approval; completed scheduled comprehensive program reviews in accordance with PNW guidelines; complete program assessment and assessment of courses within general education core; coordinate the submission of reports; and initiate new academic programs and projects when appropriate.
  • Manage daily operations of the department; develop and submit class schedules; monitor course registrations and make appropriate adjustments; communicate university and college activities and concerns to the departmental membership; communicate policies of state agencies regarding academic policy matters, legislations, regulations and requirements to department, ensure that departmental documents and websites are regularly updated; and schedule and lead departmental meetings.
  • Manage resources for the advancement of departmental and program vision and mission; regularly monitor the budget for the department; and review and approve departmental expenditures in compliance with college and university fiscal practices.
  • Guide and mentor all faculty, instructors, and staff under supervision; evaluate full and part time faculty, to include the Annual Performance Reviews; evaluate all promotion and tenure applications; review and recommend, as appropriate, faculty development awards and grants to the Dean; and coordinate course load scheduling.
  • Coordinate recruiting students in department programs; evaluate student transfer credit; review student appeals; and meet with students, as appropriate, regarding concerns about classes, faculty, and policies.
  • As a faculty member, the CCA Chairperson will be expected to teach two classes per year; to participate in research and scholarly activities in the discipline, and participate and assist department faculty in university and community service activities as appropriate.
Qualifications/Requirements

Required Experience
  • Earned Doctorate in Communication Arts, Digital Media and Communications, Communication Studies, Strategic Communication, or related field from an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within a college or university setting
  • Demonstrated experience as a collaborator, problem-solver, consensus-builder, communicator, and innovator within a university setting.
  • Experience with undergraduate and graduate curriculum and program development.
  • Experience with assessment, assurance of learning, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Rank of Professor. Senior Associate Professors will be considered.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience in higher education budgeting
  • Professional experience in a related area
  • Experience supporting successful donor and alumni relations
  • Ability to foster interdisciplinary partnerships internal and external to the College

Department of Communication and Creative Arts

Housed in the College of Humanities, Education, and Social Sciences (CHESS), the Department of Communication and Creative Arts is a multidisciplinary department serving nearly 300 undergraduate majors and over 25 graduate students. The department hosts recording studios, broadcast studio, laboratory student newspaper, and an awarding-winning student-produced show The Roundtable Perspective, a weekly interview program that airs on the local PBS affiliate.
